International Master's Degree Programmes

The following Master's degree programmes are fully delivered in English. Full-time studies in these programmes last for two academic years and consist of 120 ECTS credits. The programmes lead to a Master of Sport Sciences degree. The annual application period is from November until January for studies starting in the following September.

Master's Degree Programme in Biology of Physical Activity (MasterBPA)

The programme educates academic experts who understand the interactive mechanisms between different physiological systems and physical exercise, and their theoretical background. The programme offers three fields of specialisation: biomechanics, exercise physiology and science of sport coaching and fitness testing. The programme is designed to prepare students for careers in research centres, medical rehabilitation centres, sports medicine and exercise testing centres, sports academies and physical exercise and sports organisations. It also qualifies students to apply for postgraduate studies in the field.

Master's Degree Programme in Sport and Exercise Promotion (SportPro)

The programme provides both research and practice oriented master’s level education for future experts in the field of social and behavioural sciences of sport with two optional areas of specialisation: sport management and sport psychology. The programme qualifies graduates of the sport management specialisation to work e.g. in sport development and as experts in public, voluntary and private sectors of sport. Graduates from sport psychology can find employment in the private and public sectors as, for example, psychological health and well-being consultants, performance enhancement consultants, or academic researchers. Graduates of the programme are also qualified to apply for postgraduate studies in the field.

Our graduates have been employed e.g. in the management positions of major international sport events, as leading experts in sports departments of cities and municipalities and as experts in sport and health organisations, as well as in business companies, sport clubs, and research institutes.

The SportPro programme offers a double degree option in Sport Psychology. By completing a study abroad period in the University of Thessaly, Greece, the graduate will be awarded the degree of Master of Sport Sciences from the University of Jyväskylä and the degree of European Master in Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of Thessaly.

Financial facts related to studying in the Master's Degree Programmes

  • There are no tuition fees for EU/EEA citizens. As of 2017 intake, non-EU/non-EEA citizens will pay a tuition fee, but there is a possibility to apply for a scholarship to cover the tuition fee.
  • Master's students need to join the Student Union (JYY) and pay the membership fee.
  • Scholarships to cover living costs: generally international students need to self-finance their time in Jyväskylä.

Bachelor's Degree Studies

Bachelor's Degree studies at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences are offered only in Finnish. In order to be able to study at an undergraduate level, the applicant must be fluent in Finnish. The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences offers Bachelor's level education in the Social Sciences of Sport, Biology of Physical Activity, Sport Pedagogy and Health Sciences. Most of the Bachelor's Degree provision in English in Finland is located in the Universities of Applied Sciences.
