The Student Life development at the JYU announces a call for applications for:

Three EUR 1,500 grants for master’s theses

The grants are for students whose thesis topics are related to the students or studying at the University of Jyväskylä.

The Student Life is an operating model created by the University of Jyväskylä. It supports students in their studies and develops studying conditions. In addition to the development of basic functions at departments and service units, Student Life also promotes various research projects to develop University functions.

Possible thesis topics

The grants are awarded for master’s theses whose topics are related to either ongoing Student Life development areas or other topics related to study support. It must be noted that Student Life development activities are not directly targeted at teaching contents or pedagogics.

For more information on the Student Life Development work, see www.jyu.fi/studentlife/en.

Who can apply?

  • The grants are targeted primarily at students who are preparing for or working at the early stage of their master's theses. The research setup (research goal and methods) should be clear.
  • If the topic meets the Student Life objectives closely, the master's work may be proceeded as far as a stage of data analysis (the data can be collected, but not analyzed yet). You also need to have a named supervisor.
  • We encourage students to consider using our available data sets when applicable. The sets are mostly in Finnish.

Increasing accessibility - two application rounds, both in Spring and in Autumn 2018

In 2015 six students, in 2016 four, and in 2017 again six students were granted. Fore more information, please visit the Student Life Master's theses website.

Based on the feed-forward we will organize the application rounds in Spring and in Autumn in order to give the opportunity also for those students who will start working on their Master's thesis in Autumn. There will be three grants available in both rounds.

Note!

also the Student Life research grants applicable now.

Student Life data sets available

In the master’s theses, it is possible to use materials collected in Student Life development projects (mostly in FInnish). The materials are described on the Student Life website (www.jyu.fi/studentlife/studentlifetutkimus/sldata). In addition, it is possible to use other feedback materials produced at the University on studying and students. The master’s thesis may also be based on other material, for example, data collected by the student.

Online application

The online application form is available at

studentlifemastersgrantapplication-spring2018

The application must include a recommendation from the master’s thesis supervisor, or any other teacher from the department, clarifying that the topic and methods of the planned thesis are valid for a master’s thesis in the subject.

If the purpose is to use ready materials (the Student Life data sets) for the thesis, it is recommended to contact one of the persons named below to ensure the thesis topic does not overlap with an ongoing study.

Deadline

Please submit your application by 24.00 on Sunday June 10th, 2018. (Extended)

Selection process

The Student Life steering group will select the funded applications. The applicants will be informed of the decisions by email and on this site.
