FAQ: tuition fees, scholarships & other financial matters

If I have citizenship in a European Union (EU) country, European Economic Area (EEA) country, or Switzerland? 

• You are not required to pay tuition fees. Please note that you are required to provide proof of your status as a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland when applying for admission. EEA countries include the following non-EU countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. 

If I have a valid certificate of the permanent right of residence of a UK citizen in Finland (or a certificate from Migri that I have applied for this certificate by 30 September 2021), or a residence card for a family member of an EU or UK citizen residing in Finland? 

• You are not required to pay tuition fees. 

If I have a Finnish residence permit of type P, P-EU, or EU Blue card? 

• You are not required to pay tuition fees for the period that the permit is valid.
   

If I have a continuous residence permit (type A)?

• You are not required to pay tuition fees for the period that the permit is valid, unless the following applies to you:
  • If your continuous residence permit (type A) is granted for studying, you are required to pay tuition fees.
  • If your first residence permit in Finland was granted for the purpose of studying, you must pay tuition fees, even if you later obtained a continuous residence permit (type A) on other grounds.
  • If you have a continuous residence permit (type A) based on family ties in Finland, and your family member originally came to Finland on a residence permit granted for studying, you are also required to pay tuition fees.
     

If I have a fixed-term temporary residence permit (Type B) in Finland? 

• You are required to pay tuition fees (unless it is a residence permit on the basis of temporary protection).
   

If I have a residence permit in an EU/EEA country other than Finland? 

• This does not affect your residence permit status in Finland. You will most likely need to apply for a residence permit based on studies in Finland (Type A for studying), in which case you will be liable to pay tuition fees. 

If I am a close family member of a citizen of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland who is residing in Finland? 

• If your close family member has citizenship in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, they have the right of residence in Finland. This means that they are allowed to be in Finland for longer than three months without needing a residence permit.
• You can be considered a family member if you are a spouse, a registered partner, or a common-law spouse; a child under the age of 21 who is financially dependent on their parent(s); or a parent who is financially dependent on their child who lives in Finland. As a family member, you can obtain a residence card for a family member of an EU citizen; if you hold such a permit, you are not required to pay tuition fees. 

If I am a close family member of a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland who is NOT residing in Finland? 

• This does not affect your residence permit status in Finland. You will most likely need to apply for a residence permit based on studies in Finland (Type A for studying), in which case you will be liable to pay tuition fees. 

If I am a close family member of a person who has a Finnish residence permit of type A (granted for a purpose other than studies), P, P-EU, or EU Blue card? 

• You can be considered a family member if you are a spouse, a registered partner, or a common-law spouse; a child under the age of 21 who is financially dependent on their parent(s); or a parent who is financially dependent on their child who lives in Finland. 

  As a family member of a person who holds one of the permits, you can obtain a residence card for a family member. This permit exempts you from paying tuition fees for the period that the permit is valid, unless your family member originally came to Finland on a residence permit granted for studying. In this case, you are required to pay tuition fees.

If I have temporary protection in Finland?

If you possess a residence permit on the basis of temporary protection in Finland, you are not required to pay tuition fees for the period that the permit is valid. The permit has to be valid at the beginning of the study right (1 August) and cannot be revoked at a later stage.

If I have temporary protection in an EU/EEA country other than Finland? 

This does not affect your tuition fee liability status in Finland. If you are eligible for temporary protection in Finland, and you receive a Finnish residence permit on the basis of temporary protection before the beginning of your study right (1 August), you are not required to pay tuition fees for the period that the permit is valid. If not, you will need to apply for a residence permit based on studies in Finland (Type A for studying), in which case you will be liable to pay tuition fees.

The target duration of bachelor's degree studies is 3 academic years.   

The target duration of master's degree studies is 2 academic years.

Tuition fees and scholarships

The University of Jyväskylä will determine whether you are required to pay tuition fees in accordance with Finnish legislation, based on your nationality and a possible residence permit (if applicable) at the time of admission. 

If you have applied for a residence permit but have not received the decision by the time your study right begins (1st of August), you are required to pay the fee. If you receive a residence permit that exempts you from paying tuition fees you will not be required to pay tuition fees starting from the semester following the change of status.

Tuition fee policy

The tuition listed for each programme is a total for one academic year. You will need to pay the tuition for each academic year / semester that you register for attendance. First-year students are required to pay the tuition fee for the whole academic year by 31 July before they can register for attendance and begin their studies. Starting from the second year, it is possible to pay for one semester at a time.

Scholarships and tuition fees

No. To take advantage of the Early Bird discount for your first year's tuition fee you just have to accept your study place within 14 days after receiving your letter of admission. You should accept the study place by following the instructions provided by JYU.

The deadline for the payment of the tuition fee is 31 July.

If you accept your study place later than the 14-day limit, you can no longer benefit from the Early Bird discount.

There are no university level scholarships available for the first year of studies. 

After their first year of studies, students can apply for the JYU Scholarship, which covers part of the tuition fee. For further information, please see the page linked below.

You may apply for scholarships for your second (and third, if you are studying in a Bachelor's degree programme) year of studies at JYU if you are: 

• studying in one of our international degree programmes
• liable to pay tuition fees
• making sufficient academic progress

Am I liable to pay tuition fees?

You will be able to apply for the scholarship for your second year of studies during the spring semester of your first year. If you are a Bachelor's level student, you will be able to apply for the scholarship also for your third year of studies during the spring semester of your second year. Instructions on how to apply will be shared later on.

To be eligible for the JYU Scholarship, a student should make sufficient academic progress during their first year of studies.

Scholarships & tuition fees 

If you are a Master's level student, you can only be granted a scholarship for your second year of studies, as the target completion time for a Master's degree is 2 years. 

If you are a Bachelor's level student, you can be granted a scholarship for your second and for your third years of studies, as the target completion time for a Bachelor's degree is 3 years. 

However, in order to receive the JYU scholarship for the second year (and for the third year in the case of the bachelor’s programme), students need to make sufficient progress in their studies. This means they must complete a minimum of 55 ECTS credits during the previous academic year to qualify for the scholarship for the next year.

If you have been admitted to a bachelor’s programme with a 3+2 study right , allowing to continue your study path to a master’s degree, you’ll be granted the JYU Scholarship for the master’s studies as well, on the condition that you complete your bachelor’s degree within three academic years.
