Tutkimuskuvaus

My PhD thesis examined post-2012 Russian cultural policy, highlighting its transformation into a tool for advancing Vladimir Putin’s political agenda. Specifically, I analysed the legal and political shifts that enabled a conservative turn, fostering a new set of power relations and leadership in the cultural field. Apart from doctoral work, I conducted the project Finnish-Russian Cross-Border Neighbourship: Political Perspectives and Cultural Resilience (Kone Foundation, 2018-2019), which explored how technocratic approaches to de-securitisation and depoliticisation facilitated the normalisation of post-2014 dialogue between democratic Finland and increasingly conservative Russia.

Currently, I am part of the team project ‘Russian World’ Next Door: discourses of the Russian political communication and cultural diplomacy in Finland (Kone Foundation, 2023-2026). My focus is on the remnants of Russia’s diplomatic presence in Finland, such as the Russian House in Helsinki and affiliated organisations. I investigate how Russia’s ambassadors promote state-sponsored education to foreigners and support compatriot networks. I am also expanding this research to the Russian House’s operations in Africa to trace the dissemination of Kremlin-aligned narratives among Finland’s international partners.

From 2026 to 2027, I will be a research fellow under the Academy of Norway-funded project devoted to studying wartime trasformation of politics and society.
