Are you interested in learning more about the role of public and private bodies in civic engagement? Do you want to meet and exchange ideas with students from different European universities? If yes, then you should apply for the Summer School on Public and Private bodies in civic engagement that will be organized in Sibiu, Romania from 11-15 September 2023.
This Summer School is open to all students from universities in FORTHEM Alliance, a network of nine European universities that aims to bring together a new generation of creative Europeans able to cooperate across languages, borders and disciplines to address societal challenges and skills shortages faced in Europe. However, students from final years are especially encouraged to participate, as they will benefit from the opportunity to develop their skills and competencies for their future careers.
The Summer School will be hosted and coordinated by Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu. The participants will have the chance to attend lectures, workshops, field visits and cultural activities related to the topic of the summer school. They will also work in groups on a project that will be presented at the end of the week.

There are FORTHEM scholarships available for selected students (max. 4 students) from each FORTHEM partner university.

The summer school aims to provide students with an opportunity to learn about different aspects of civil society and to develop their own projects using a creative approach.
Students who participate in the summer school will learn:
● What are public and private bodies and how they relate to civic engagement
● How to use Design Thinking as a methodology to identify and solve social problems
● How to work in teams and present their projects to peers and experts
● How to appreciate the cultural diversity and heritage of Sibiu and its surroundings
● How to apply their knowledge and skills to real-life situations involving public and private actors
Brief agenda of the summer school:
- Monday: Introduction and exploration. Students will get to know each other and the city of Sibiu through a treasure hunt activity. They will also meet representatives of the school inspectorate and some NGOs that work on civil engagement with various groups of people, such as children, adults and seniors. They will learn about the public and private systems that shape civil society and their challenges and opportunities.
- Tuesday: Problem identification and ideation. Students will participate in an interactive workshop using Design Thinking, a methodology that helps to find innovative solutions for complex problems. They will be challenged to identify social issues that they care about and to brainstorm possible solutions. They will also visit a school and observe how it operates as a public body in civic engagement.
- Wednesday: Prototyping and testing. Students will continue to work on their projects, using the Design Thinking methodology to create prototypes of their solutions and test them with potential users. They will also visit a private body that is involved in civil activities and learn from its experience and best practices.
- Thursday: Presentation and feedback. Students will present their projects to a panel of experts and receive constructive feedback on their work. They will also reflect on their learning process and outcomes. The day will end with a cultural evening, where students will enjoy some local music, food and traditions.
- Friday: Field trip and farewell. Students will go on a field trip to visit some of the medieval fortified churches around Sibiu, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. They will learn about the history and culture of these monuments and their role in civic engagement. They will also say goodbye to each other and exchange contacts for future collaboration.
