Horizon Europe Pillar II: Consortia project ideation, proposal development, and application processes - from idea to funding
A three-day bootcamp in the winter wonderland of Jyväskylä: workshops, group discussions, seminars, and activities on the theme of developing joint, collaborative consortia project ideas to proposals and funding applications in the Horizon Europe Pillar II programme for 2026 and 2027.
Further discussions and funding action plans for the new Horizon Europe Work Programme 2028-2034.
Please note the dates on the FORTHEM website (link below) are incorrect: the bootcamp will be organised in March, not 21-23 January. The registration for the bootcamp will re-open in late January.
Register by 23.1.2026 Online Workshop: Entrepreneurship, ethics and legitimacy in an ever-changing world
This workshop is designed as an immersive, high-value learning experience addressing one of the most pressing challenges faced by present entrepreneurship: how to create, sustain, and scale entrepreneurial initiatives that are not only economically viable but also ethically grounded and socially legitimate in a rapidly changing global environment.
The workshop adopts an interactive and applied methodology, combining conceptual frameworks from entrepreneurship, ethics, and sustainability, with real-world cases, group discussions, and guided reflection.
The workshop is open to Doctoral Students, Postdoctoral Researchers, and Junior Professors up to 8 years after completing the PhD from any university of the FORTHEM Alliance.

Register by 27.1.2026 Online Student Workshop "Participatory AI for Climate"
“Participatory AI for Climate” is a project by the nine FORTHEM Alliance partner universities across Europe. The workshop aims to gather student perspectives to support the development of a new international and interdisciplinary FORTHEM teaching programme on participatory uses of AI in climate contexts. If you are interested in the role AI can play in responding to the climate crisis and want to help shape a new teaching program, register below and join the brainstorming workshop!

Register by 30.1.2026 FORTHEM Digital Toolbox Talk - Share, Explore, Connect
Digital Toolbox Talks are informal online meetups dedicated to exploring the use of digital tools in university teaching. The format is designed to foster knowledge exchange among members of the FORTHEM community who are curious about or passionate about digitally enhanced teaching. Digital Toolbox Talks are primarily designed for educators and instructional staff from FORTHEM universities. However, students and any member of the FORTHEM community interested in discussing digital tools in a relaxed setting are warmly invited to participate.
Organizer:The Digital Toolbox Talks are organized by the FORTHEM Think Tank for innovative learning and teaching (T5.2) in cooperation with the FORTHEM Digital Academy (T3.1).

Register by 31.1.2026 FORTHEM PhD Network
FORTHEM Alliance is establishing a PhD Network to connect researchers working at the doctoral level across all partner universities, strengthen their visibility, and integrate their perspectives into FORTHEM’s activities in research, innovation, education, and societal engagement.
FORTHEM invites motivated candidates from all disciplines to join the founding group and participate in a Conference on the Role of Universities in Science Diplomacy held under the FORTHEM Presidency. Selected participants will participate in a five-day stay in Opole (20–24 April 2026) to meet, exchange perspectives, and jointly develop the network’s initial concept with alliance representatives.
Who can apply?
Researchers working at the doctoral level at any FORTHEM partner university (enrolled PhD candidates or researchers engaged in doctoral research).
All disciplines are eligible.
Applicants should be motivated to co-create a transnational PhD Network.

Register by 2.2.2026 Online course: Latvian language for beginners
The study course is intended for students without any preliminary knowledge of Latvian. It is designed in a way that allows students to acquire basic reading, writing, and speaking skills that are necessary for elementary everyday communication at level A1.
The course is divided into six topics, each of which gives students an example of a different real-life situation: getting acquainted, studying, choosing a profession, rural and city life, interests, hobbies, visiting a library, Latvian traditional cuisine, shopping, etc. The course material covers communication phrases, required vocabulary, and grammar.
The course has been developed for the FORTHEM Digital Academy and is designed for self-paced studying, except for the speaking practice, which is organized in the form of online classes.

Planned Activities
1. Round Table with FORTHEM Students
Date: 12 February 2026, 10:00-13:00 CET / 11:00-14:00 EET
An open discussion among nine FORTHEM students sharing mobility and event experiences.
2. Collective Work on the FORTHEM Code of Conduct
Students will collaborate to revise and integrate the FORTHEM Code of Conduct for inclusive mobility and events. The final version will be adopted by FORTHEM universities, and the student perspective will be invaluable for fostering a real change in mindset.
3. Future Guidelines for International Students
If, during the work, we identify specific needs regarding the reception of international students, we will propose to create practical guidelines for international students at FORTHEM campuses, including essential information on services, health, security, and cultural life.

Register by 10.2.2026 FORTHEM Open Call: Democracy week 2026
The FORTHEM partner universities are unified in their belief that freedom and democracy are pivotal in facilitating the free exchange of ideas and collaboration in education and research.
As such, the FORTHEM alliance invites students and academics to contribute to Democracy Week across the nine FORTHEM universities. FORTHEM also invites students and academics to participate in the flagship event European Conference on Democracy and Human Rights 2026 at the University of Agder, Norway. Through this initative, the alliance hopes to enhance awareness of democratic practices and issues within the community.

Apply by 15.2.2026 Blended Intensive Program “Design Your Life” at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu
The course helps students to identify their values and decide which path they want to take. The concept focuses on professional careers, addresses personal aspects, and shows new perspectives for combining professional and private life. Cooperating within a group has an exceptionally motivating effect on students. It encourages them to talk about their experiences, wishes, and goals in life. This exchange can reduce uncertainties and develop soft skills. Furthermore, it can ease the transition between studies and career.

Have you ever wondered why some voices in politics are heard more than others? This course invites you to explore how representative democracies function by examining the mechanisms behind political representation.

Register by 28.2.2026 Peer-to-peer Project 3_Map of Green FORTHEM Routes
A creative initiative involving students from the FORTHEM Alliance, aimed at designing sustainable and intercultural travel routes across Europe. The goal is to create a Green Map of Europe, promoting eco-friendly mobility and cultural exchange within the Alliance FORTHEM.
Participants will engage in virtual sessions led by FORTHEM experts, where they will learn tools and methods for sustainable travel planning. The project will involve parallel work on different routes and topics, encouraging creativity and knowledge-sharing across the team.
By the end of the project, students will have co-created a practical and inspiring resource that supports greener travel choices and strengthens intercultural connections across FORTHEM campuses.

The University of Opole (UO), Poland, is hosting the fourth edition of the FORTHEM Summer School for Teachers and Teacher Education Students between June 22 and 26, 2026. The Summer School will focus on the exploration of the frontiers in a variety of areas of education: Gamification, Lifelong Learning, Online Learning, Moodle Courses, and Economics, among others.

Today, we constantly look at screens, images, data - but do we know how and what to see? How do we make sense of the visual information? How do perception, attention, and interpretation shape knowledge, learning, and creativity?
This symposium explores visual literacy as the capacity not only to read images but to engage with them critically, reflectively, and imaginatively. We aim to create a space for discussing how visuality influences our thinking, teaching, research, and cultural life.
