Background information

I am Full Professor of Journalism Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Department of Language and Communication Studies. I have a Docentship (Adjunct Professor) in communication studies at the University of Helsinki. I have received my doctorate from the Aalto University School of Art and Design, Department of Media. In all, I have a versatile background from Finnish universities in journalism (University of Jyväskylä), media and communication (University of Helsinki, University of Tampere), visual communication (University of Art and Design and Aalto University School of Art and Design) and organizational communication and management (Aalto University School of Business). I have also made several research visits to the University of Tokyo and Fordham University in New York.

In my work I can take advantage especially of my expertise regarding the changes in the networked media and communication environment. I have studied media from several different angles and explored the evolution in different media sectors, focusing on digital communication, online communication, social media, mobile communication and visual communication. A key interest of mine is also the study of media organizations and media management, thereby joining the study of organizational communication with media studies. Media management is of increasing relevance for media studies, due mainly to the disruption experienced by legacy media organizations.

When teaching journalism students at the University of Jyväskylä I approach journalism as media work with a rather wide-ranging focus. In the contemporary media environment and journalistic culture, it is essential for journalists to be experts also in other forms of media work than journalistic content production. I consider media work to be of significance also to a much wider array of professions in the media and communications field.
