Bachelor degree programmes
Bachelor’s Degree programme in Business Innovation and Sustainability
In the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Business Innovation and Sustainability students need to complete minimum 30 ECTS of required language and communication courses. There are different degree requirements for international and Finnish students.
International students, who have not completed their pre-university education in Finland, need to do:
- 10 ECTS of integrated language courses, which are the following
- min. 15 ECTS (= 3 courses) of Finnish courses on the appropriate level with the following courses
- XSUX1001 My Finnish (5 ECTS)
- XSUX1002 Everyday Finnish (5 ECTS)
- XSUX1003 Study Life Finnish (5 ECTS)
- XSUX1004 Finnish in the Society (5 ECTS)

- min. 5 ECTS of elective language courses to meet the 30 ECTS requirement (or do 20 ECTS of Finnish courses): Communication and language course offering at Movi
Finnish students, who have completed their pre-university education in Finland, need to do:
- 12 ECTS of Integrated language courses, which are the following
- The law decreed courses / competences in the other domestic language (3 ECTS). If you did your pre-university education in a Finnish-taught school, you must demonstrate your skills in Swedish and do the courses XRUX0010 Ruotsi, kirjallinen taito (1–3 op) and XRUX0090 Ruotsi, suullinen taito, (1–2 op); if you did your pre-university education in a Swedish taught school, you must demonstrate your skills in Finnish, please see: Ruotsin kielen opinnot Movissa.
- Min. 15 ECTS of courses in a single other foreign language (i.e. not Finnish, Swedish or English) in order to meet the 30 ECTS requirement: Viestintä- ja kieliopintotarjonta.
Bachelor’s Degree programme in Immersive Software Engineering and AI
In the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Immersive Software Engineering and AI students need to complete minimum 10-20 ECTS of required language and communication courses. There are different degree requirements for international and Finnish students.
International students, who have not completed their pre-university education in Finland, need to do min. 20 ECTS with the following courses:

Academic English and working life communication courses
Multidisciplinary and multilingual language communication courses XENB0004-XENB0007
Most programmes have opted for the multidisciplinary and multilingual language communication courses focusing on academic research communication and thesis writing in English and/or working life communication skills and team work in multilingual and -cultural settings. These courses are in the recommended order (order might change depending on programme recommendations and other course selections):
Some programmes have set mandatory courses whereas others have set just an ECTS amount and students can freely choose from the course above based on their needs and the skills and comptencies they wish to develop.

Students doing XENB0004-XENB0007 should not participate in the mandatory English courses for the other Master's programmes as these overlap.
XENX009 Integrated Research Communication
Some Master's degree programmes require the course XENX009 Integrated Research Communication (4 - 5 ECTS) and possibly other courses
Students doing XENX0009 can and are encouraged to participate in the teaching of XENB0005 Communication in multilingual and multicultural project work 2-3ECTS and XENB0006 Transferring skills from academia to working life 2-3 ECTS, should not participate in the mandatory academic English courses for the other Master's programmes as these overlap.
XYHH for Music and Science programme
Students in the bilingual Music and Science programme have the following mandatory courses:
Music and science students doing XYHH4000-XYHH4003 should not participate in the mandatory English courses of the other Master-programmes other than XENB0006 Transferring skills from academia to working life 2-3 ECTS.
XENB0001 and XENB0002
Master-programmes where there are no mandatory academic English courses can attend the following courses
Students doing XENB001 and XENB002 can and are encouraged to participate in the teaching of XENB0005 Communication in multilingual and multicultural project work 2-3ECTS and XENB0006 Transferring skills from academia to working life 2-3 ECTS, should not participate in the mandatory academic English courses for the other Master's programmes as these overlap.
Finnish as a second language for international students
Most Master's degree programmes require 5 ECTS of Finnish studies on a suitable level from international students. Students are encouraged to study more Finnish than the required minimum. If you are pursuing a Master’s degree at JYU and if the language of your secondary education was Finnish or Swedish and if you have completed your first-cycle (Bachelor’s) degree abroad, you have to demonstrate the language proficiency in mother tongue and the other domestic language required by the Government Decree on University Degrees in your Master's degree, XRUX0010 Ruotsi, kirjallinen taito (1–3 op) and XRUX0090 Ruotsi, suullinen taito, (1–2 op) when Swedish is the other domestic. Please consult your programme study coordinator on this, especially if Finnish is your other domestic language.
