Visiting our campus
The University of Jyväskylä campus is a unique cultural and natural environment. Here, you can trace the roots of Finland’s first teacher seminary back to the 1880s and explore the campus environment designed by Alvar Aalto. In July 2026, the Aalto Campus was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the works of Alvar, Aino, and Elissa Aalto. The Seminaarinmäki Campus and its commitment to equal education have also been awarded the European Heritage Label.
In the summer, Aalto2 Museum Centre organises public guided tours of the University of Jyväskylä’s Seminaarinmäki campus in English from 6 June to 15 August 2026. On the historic Seminaarinmäki campus, red-brick buildings from the 1880s meet the modern, timeless architecture of Alvar Aalto. This layered and protected campus has been awarded the European Heritage Label, and the Aalto Campus is also currently nominated for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The three campus areas of the University of Jyväskylä – Seminaarinmäki, Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne – form a unique blend of architecture, art and nature that invites you to explore the rich history of the University.
The collections of the University Library and the University Museum are available to the university community as well as to all citizens, and they provide access to research-based knowledge, science and art. The Library’s comprehensive information resources and final theses in the University’s fields of research and teaching are available to everyone. Fennica, the Legal Deposit Collection, is an archival collection of Finnish publications from the early 19th century to the present day. The University Museum’s collections tell the fascinating 160-year history of the University and are a significant part of both the academic cultural heritage and the natural heritage of Central Finland. The University’s unique art collection includes nearly 1,300 works.

In April 2022, the European Commission awarded the European Heritage Label (EHL) to Jyväskylä’s Seminaarinmäki campus and equality in education, the first in Finland and the Nordic countries.
The Seminaarinmäki campus is a protected, nationally significant built cultural environment with buildings from the late 19th century to the present day. In this environment, foundations were laid for the world-famous Finnish school system, as this was the location of the first Finnish Teacher Seminary, founded in 1863.
