Centre for Applied Language Studies

The Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS) is a research unit in the University of Jyväskylä, which produces research-based information on language education and language-related phenomena, needs and challenges in a changing society.

Our research has three focus areas: assessment of language proficiency and for learning, language learning, teaching and multiliteracies, and language in communities and societies. These areas are interlinked and aim to explore individual, community and societal language phenomena and challenges and to provide research-based solutions.

Doctoral Studies

In the Faculty's Doctoral Programme in Humanities and Social Sciences, one specialisation is Language Studies and Communication Studies. The specialisation is organized in cooperation between the Department of Language and Communication Studies and the Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS). 

In the specialisation of Language Studies and Communication Studies, you may conduct doctoral research in e.g. Applied Language Studies or Applied Linguistics. As research on applied language studies is multi-disciplinary, doctoral studies are suitable for candidates with a background not only in languages or linguistics, but also for those with an interest in language and a background in education or social studies in general.

Get to know research at CALS

The Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS) is a research institute at the University of Jyväskylä. The aim of the centre is to develop language education on a wide-ranging basis. Research conducted in the CALS anticipates and takes into account social needs and issues. Common to all research is the view on language as a social and interactive phenomenon that constructs identities and culture.

Research projects are characterized by a multidisciplinary and applied approach that brings together perspectives from, for example, language study, sociology, educational research, and pedagogy. Research is focused on the effects of social changes on language education.
