Welcome to the 6th Oikos Finland Conference to be held in Jyväskylä 11th-14th March 2025. This conference will bring together current basic and applied research in ecology and evolutionary biology, highlighting that their interplay is key to the fundamental understanding and management of natural resources.

Welcome to the Oikos Finland 2025 Conference!

We are thrilled to announce that the conference attracted over 400 participants. The program includes over 200 oral presentations, ca. 70 poster presentations and 6 international keynote speakers. Additionally the workshops reached all the quotas in record time.

The scientific program successfully covers a diverse range of topics in ecology, evolution and conservation biology, divided into 27 exciting oral sessions and a 3.5 hours poster session.

The conference will take place in the Seminaarinmäki campus at the University of Jyväskylä. This is located West of the city center, about a 20-minute walk from the downtown area (please see the attached map). Local transportation information can be found here.

Most of the conference activities will happen in the Liikunta building (1), except the welcome reception, which will be held in the lobby of the C building (3).

Dinner and the conference party will take place at Ilokivi (2).

Every presenter will have 11 minutes for their talk, so please prepare your talk for 9 minutes and reserve 2 minutes for questions.

You can either attach your presentation directly to the email, or alternatively, if the file is too large, you can use a file transfer service such as Funet. Please use the following convention to name your file: “Sessionnumber_Lastname_Firstname”. Your session number can be found in the program.

There are no strict rules regarding poster size or material, but please consider that the dimensions of our poster walls are: width 800 mm and height 1780 mm, and your poster should fit within these limits. Please also note that the posters will be placed on the walls using pins, (which we will provide).

Posters can be installed starting Tuesday March 11th at 9 AM and should be taken down by Friday March 14th at 13.00 at the latest.

Workshop Information

As part of the conference, we will offer three workshops.

The 11th of March there will be a whole-day workshop on the Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities (HMSC) statistical framework.

During the last day of the conference, on the 14th of March (afternoon) there will be a half-day bioinformatics workshop for metabarcoding data using PipeCraft2, and another one about how to successfully write scientific articles.

There is no additional fee for participating in any of the workshops, and the registration for them will open at the same time as for the conference. Although we want to include as many participants as possible, for logistical reasons, we will have to cap the number of attendees (particularly for workshops on March 14th). Therefore, registration for them will be granted on a first come-first-served basis.

March 11 - whole day

In this workshop, the participants learn how to apply the Joint Species Distribution Modelling Framework of Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities (HMSC) with the R-package Hmsc-R. HMSC can be used to model multispecies data on species occurrences/abundances as a function of environmental, spatial and temporal predictors, species traits and taxonomies/phylogenies. The workshop includes brief lectures introducing the conceptual and statistical background of HMSC. The main part of the workshop consists of computer demonstrations showing how to apply Hmsc-R to various types of data, such as hierarchical, spatial and temporal sampling designs, as well as dataset including traits and taxonomical/phylogenetic information. Compared to earlier HMSC courses organized in 2020 and 2022, this course includes as new elements instructions on how to fit HMSC up to 1000 times faster with the newly released high-performance computing module Hmsc-HPC, as well as new methods on how to link HMSC outputs to niche theory by summarizing them into shared and idiosyncratic responses of the species to measured and latent predictors. Participants working already with HMSC on their own data are provided one-to-one support. The teachers of the workshop include the HMSC developers Otso Ovaskainen and Gleb Tikhonov.

March 14th - afternoon

Metabarcoding has become an increasingly important strategy for monitoring biodiversity. However, the identification of taxa by metabarcoding requires sophisticated processing of high-throughput sequencing data, which often requires advanced bioinformatics skills on the command-line interface. This workshop introduces PipeCraft2 (pipecraft2-manual.readthedocs.io), which aims to simplify the analyses of amplicon sequences by wrapping various popular tools and pipelines into an easily usable graphical user interface (GUI) software. This hands-on workshop is accompanied by short lectures to guide the way into the metabarcoding data analysis strategies for non-bioinformaticians. Fungal ITS2 amplicons will be used as an example dataset in the workshop, but the approaches for analyzing other gene amplicons, such as from mitochondrial COI, will also be demonstrated. PipeCraft2 is available for Windows (10 and newer), Linux, and Mac (10.15+ and newer) operating systems (administrator rights of a user are required). The workshop is aimed for PhD students and researchers using metabarcoding in their research or developing bioinformatics methods in this area. The teachers of the workshop are the developer of PipeCraft Sten Anslan, and Brendan Furneaux.

March 14th - afternoon

Most researchers wonder what editors and reviewers really want to see in their papers. This workshop will help answer that question by showing some of the most-frequent journal editor and reviewer criticisms of research papers. Using initial drafts, real reviewer and editor comments, and final published versions of papers as examples, you’ll learn to identify what’s missing or not working in your own writing, how to avoid and correct common errors in your writing, and thus how to increase your chances of getting your paper accepted and published while avoiding a desk reject. By the end of this workshop, you’ll be equipped to review your paper using a pre-submission checklist to make the publication process for your next article faster and smoother. You’ll see how authors responded to editors and reviewers and how their comments were ultimately incorporated into revised published papers. This workshop will walk through what editors’ and reviewers’ comments mean (e.g., “State clearly how this research contributes to the literature”), and how to interpret those comments and transform them into compelling revisions. This workshop is aimed at all researchers at the early stage, from PhD students to young independent researchers. The teachers of this workshop are Marc Abernathy (professional editor) and Carlos A. Aguilar-Trigueros (Microbial ecologist at JYU).

All abstracts must be submitted through our online form and should not be longer than 250 words. Make sure the title of your abstract is informative and contains details that can help us identify the best session for your presentation. Please avoid using all caps for the title of the abstract.

We would like to accommodate as many presentations as possible, however in some rare cases, we may need to turn some talk presentations to poster presentations due to logistic constraints. Accelerating rates of environmental change and the continued loss of global biodiversity threaten critical ecosystem functions, and, in turn their related services provided to society. Biodiversity is considered as the foundation of ecosystem functioning and stability, as it affects the fluxes of nutrients, material and energy within and across ecosystems. We invite talks on research exploring the processes that connect biodiversity with ecosystem functions and services. We welcome studies from terrestrial (e.g., forests, peatlands, croplands) and aquatic (e.g., streams, rivers and lakes) ecosystems, as well as on their interactions (e.g., how forest management affects freshwater communities).

Ecological and evolutionary datasets often contain information simultaneously on multiple species. Many widely applied statistical approaches, such as species distribution modeling, consider the data on each species separately, thus failing to account for the many kinds of ecological and statistical dependencies that the species have on each other. Considering each species in isolation can lead to biased inference and restricts the set of questions that can be asked from multispecies data. In this session, we welcome contributions that present methodological advances in the analyses of multispecies data, including all fields of ecological and evolutionary biology.

Citizen science, involving the public in scientific research, has become an invaluable approach in addressing pressing ecological challenges. With rapid environmental changes and biodiversity loss, engaging non-professional participants in data collection, observation, and analysis helps to broaden research capacity. Citizen science enriches ecological studies by providing large-scale data collection and obtaining a deeper understanding of ecosystems. We invite presentations exploring methodologies and outcomes of citizen science in ecological research, including hypothesis-driven small-scale works as well as larger ecosystem monitoring initiatives.

Degradation of biodiversity through global change has catalysed a general demand for biodiversity preserving policies and management. This is not possible without reliable information on quantitative biodiversity patterns and trends across spatial and temporal scales. However, for most taxonomic groups, and for biodiversity as whole, we still lack critically-validated monitoring methods for producing such information, as well as methods for estimating the uncertainties associated with it.

Existing individual monitoring programs also lack coordination both within countries, and taxon-speciﬁc assessments are rarely combined into holistic analyses of the general state of diversity. Furthermore, it is not clear what type of data should be collected for cost efficient biodiversity monitoring in the future. In this session, we welcome contributions that present methodological and conceptual advances in monitoring biodiversity for the purposes of policy and management.

Experiments are critical for bridging theoretical and empirical research in ecology and evolution. Experimental (manipulative) approaches specifically designed to test causality related to hypothesized theoretical predictions, provide the most reliable way of linking theory with data. In this session, we invite presentations of studies testing ecological and/or evolutionary theory through any kind of experimental approaches (lab, greenhouse, or field experiments), at any level of organization (populations or communities). We also welcome presentations about methodological advancements of experimental approaches in ecology and evolution.

Microbes underpin key ecosystem processes and shape the population dynamics of plants and animals. Understanding and predicting the impact of microbial diversity is crucial for advancing ecological research. To achieve this, the field is increasingly adopting a functional or trait-based approach, which calls for innovative methods to quantify the effects of microbial diversity. This session invites contributions that focus on measuring microbial traits using -omics technologies, as well as morphological and physiological traits, to better predict ecological and evolutionary processes. We welcome studies on all microbial groups—including bacteria, fungi, algae, and protists—in both terrestrial and aquatic environments.

High-throughput sequencing of DNA and RNA from environmental samples provides high volumes of data about ecological communities. This can include efficient detection and identification of small and large species through eDNA, characterization of non-culturable microbial communities in complex substrates, and measurement of ecosystem functions through metatranscriptomics. In this session, we welcome presentations focusing on both methodology for environmental sequencing and ecological studies incorporating these techniques.

The biodiversity footprint measures the impact of human activities on nature. Human activities are essentially the production and consumption of goods and services that may be assessed from individuals and organizations to countries and larger regions. Biodiversity footprint links the consumption of goods or services to the drivers of biodiversity loss, such as land use, climate change, or pollution, and estimates the negative impacts they cause on ecosystems and species. Biodiversity footprint assessment helps citizens to make more sustainable choices, businesses to formulate measurable strategies and policymakers to create efficient policies to reduce negative impacts on nature. We invite presentations that explore the methodologies and outcomes of biodiversity footprint assessments in different societal contexts.

Invited Keynote speakers

Dr. Chiara De Pasqual is a post-doctoral researcher at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Chiara completed her Ph.D. at the University of Jyväskylä, where she studied the role of sexual selection in the maintenance of phenotypic and genetic diversity (i.e. color polymorphism), using the wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis) as a study system. Chiara won the Oikos Best Thesis Award in 2023. Her main interests include behavioral observations, chemical ecology,epidemiology, pathogen evolution, and, previously, predator interactions.

Prof. Dr. Marjo Saastamoinen is the Group Leader of the Life-history Evolution Research Group and one of the PIs of the Research Center for Ecological Change at the University of Helsinki. Marjo’s research focuses on the responses and underlying mechanisms of natural populations and communities to environmental change. She is particularly interested in how individual-level responses or strategies impact population dynamics and how species-level traits may reflect abundance and population trends. In her research she combines long-term monitoring data with experimental, genomic and modelling approaches. Much of her work involves using the Glanville fritillary butterfly and its metapopulation in the Åland islands as a model system. This system offers a unique opportunity to study her questions of interest, as long-term data on the population dynamics and ecologically relevant information are available for more than 500 local-populations of the butterfly, key life-history traits can be assessed for large number of individuals, and the molecular tools are available to apply genomic research to ecologically relevant traits. More recently her work also extends to other Lepidoptera, insects and beyond, and assessments at more community level responses.

Prof. Dr. Mathew Leibold works at the University of Florida as both an experimental and theoretical ecologist. Mathews’ work has been highly influential in the development of community ecology as a field, with central contributions to Metacommunity Theory and contemporary Niche Theory. Mathews' work also involves pioneering work in linking community ecology with evolutionary biology. These empirical and theoretical contributions have been fundamental to the general understanding of the dynamics of ecological communities, and Mathew is thus considered a leading authority in community ecology. Mathew is currently working at the interface of ecological theory and statistical modeling, exploring the degree to which theory on ‘disordered systems’ to community assembly can be linked to statistical methods of pattern analysis.

Dr. Anita Julianne Tricia Narwani is the Group Leader of the Algal Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Group in the Aquatic Ecology Department at Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology). Her research aims to determine the mechanisms of species coexistence and the impact of biodiversity on ecosystem properties. As an empiricist, she uses numerous approaches in her research, spanning the range from careful manipulations of biodiversity in lab microcosms, to whole-ecosystem manipulations and data-synthesis. Her curiosity about how species coexist has focused, so far, on how environmental variation in resources and temperature determine the strength and outcome of competition. Recently, she has been investigating how these factors influence species' metabolism, growth, and evolution.

Professor Janne Kotiaho works at the University of Jyväskylä in both the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and as the director of the School of Resource Wisdom (JYU.Wisdom), which focuses on planetary well-being and sustainability research. Janne also serves as chairman of the Finnish Nature Panel appointed by the Governmenet of Finland, which produces scientific information about biodiversity to support decision-making. Janne’s current projects focus on biodiversity offsetting as an operational tool for a just sustainability transition towards no net loss of ecosystems and biodiversity and on the assessment of the carbon and biodiversity footprint (and handprint) of consumption of individuals and organizations such as universities, businesses, cities or countries.
