Academic year
The academic year begins on 1 August and ends on 31 July. The autumn term begins on 1 August and ends on 31 December. The spring term begins on 1 January and ends on 31 July. Teaching is offered during periods determined by the university.
Teaching periods for the academic years 2025-2026 and 2026-2027
The teaching periods at the University of Jyväskylä are organised as follows:

Organising teaching should be avoided during the university's opening ceremony.
When faculties or other institutions providing teaching compile their syllabus, they should pay special attention to ensure that the teaching begins on the specified dates, and that teaching during autumn semester continues into December, while spring semester teaching continues into May.
Important dates for exchange students
When applying for a grant, please bear in mind that the courses and exams end on the following dates:
- Academic year 2025-2026: 19 December 2025 in the autumn semester, and by 24 May 2026 in the spring semester.
- Academic year 2026-2027: 18 December 2026 in the autumn semester, and by 30 May 2027 in the spring semester.
The recommended arrival dates for the academic year 2025-2026 are:
- Autumn semester 2025: 25 August 2025
- Spring semester 2026: 2 January 2026
The orientation for incoming exchange students starting their studies in January is held in the week before the beginning of teaching, on the following days:
- Spring semester 2026: 5 and 7 January 2026
- Spring semester 2027: dates to be confirmed
