LACS1014 Approaches in Language and Learning (5 cr)
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to
- understand key terms related to language and learning
- critically assess, synthesize and apply theories of how learning and teaching are impacted by cognitive, socio-cultural and communicative factors
- construct, apply, and adapt practices and approaches depending on factors in the formal and informal learning spaces
- compare international and national practices and strategies occurring in the language ecology.

Content
This course examines the various approaches and perspectives in language learning and teaching. It highlights the learning context (multilingual, immersion, bilingual, ELF, EAL, ESL), the various approaches socio-cultural theories, cognitive, functional, and the types of pedagogy (ZPD, Communicative approaches, learning strategies and styles) and factors involved (age, prior knowledge, social capital, communication).

Assessment criteria
Passing the course requires completion of all required assignments in line with stated learning outcomes. An 80% attendance requirement is applied.
