How Technology is Transforming VET Career Guidance Across Europe
Digital platforms, AI-powered tools, and hybrid service models are transforming how career guidance reaches learners in European vocational education and training (VET) systems. At the Skills2Capabilities Final Conference on 13–14 November 2025, Jaana Kettunen and Sally-Anne Barnes presented insights from the cross-country comparative study with poster titled "How Technology is Transforming VET Career Guidance Across Europe" .
The event brought together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners from across Europe and beyond to reflect on the project’s key insights and to explore future directions for skills and capabilities development. Within this context, the poster examined how emerging technologies are reshaping career guidance across Europe, with a particular focus on their implications for vocational education and training (VET) systems.
The poster presentation highlighted three central findings. First, the use of digital technologies in VET career guidance is already underway, as many countries are already introducing digital platforms that expand access and diversify support practices. Second, digital technology is not replacing guidance— it is redefining it, fostering hybrid approaches that blend functionalities combining online and in-person support. Third, the analysis underscored that by combining digital tools with human expertise, European VET systems can support adaptive, inclusive, and resilient career development for all learners
The researchers also offered recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders seeking to strengthen career guidance across Europe: develop robust digital infrastructure, ensure digital inclusion, balance technology with personal support, build digital capacity among professionals, foster multi-stakeholder collaboration, and establish national digital strategies.
