Doctoral studies: Information on academic transcripts

The instructions are valid during the 2026 admission rounds to doctoral programmes at JYU.

Grade and grading scale of the thesis

The University of Jyväskylä requires that a student selected for doctoral studies has at least a grade of Good, (3/5), or another grade of a similar level (if the thesis has been graded) on the thesis included in the degree providing eligibility to apply or another higher education degree of the same or higher level.

If the master’s thesis has been graded on a grading scale and the transcript of records (or degree certificate) does not include the grade obtained, a separate official document proving the grade is required. The document should be issued and officially certified by the awarding institution.

If the transcript of records (or degree certificate) does not include information on the grading scale of the master’s thesis used at the institution at the time of the study, please add a direct link to an official website where the information on the grading scale can be verified to the Further information section of your online application form.

If there is no official website in English, Finnish or Swedish, a separate official document describing the grading scale is required. The document should be issued and officially certified by the awarding institution or compiled by the applicant and officially certified by the awarding institution.

The teaching language of the degree

At the University of Jyväskylä, students selected to pursue a doctoral degree are required to have proficiency in Finnish or English at the admission stage.

If you demonstrate your skills in English with a degree and the teaching language of the degree is not specified in the transcript of records (or degree certificate) and it is not possible to specify the teaching language in any other way, please add a direct link to an official website where the teaching language can be verified to the Further information section of your online application form.

If there is no official website in English, Finnish or Swedish, you can prove the teaching language of the degree with a separate document issued by the awarding institution and officially certified by the institution.

Grades, grading scale, credits, names, and completion times of study units

Information on your grades, grading scale, the credits awarded for individual study units, full names and completion times of study units is required for the academic evaluation of your application. If these are not available on your transcript of records, the evaluation may not be possible, or it may be affected negatively by the missing information.

If the information that is missing from your transcript of records (e.g. grading scale, full names of study units or the credits awarded for individual study units) is available on the webpage of the educational institution in English, Finnish or Swedish, add the direct link of that specific webpage to the Further information section of your online application form.
