Prof. Timo Muotka from University of Oulu will present  "Streams in forested landscapes: brown consequences of the green bioeconomy"

ABSTRACT: Finland is a land of forests – and forestry. Peatland drainage aims to enhance forest growth and has caused a massive alteration of forested landscapes of Finland. As the lowest locations in a landscape, rivers and lakes accumulate impacts from all anthropogenic activities within their catchments. This talk summarizes evidence from a series of studies on the consequences of peatland drainage and other forestry activities on stream biodiversity and stream ecosystem health using a multi-taxon (invertebrates, microbes) approach that combines targeted mesocosm experiments with broad-scale correlative surveys.

BIOSKETCH: Timo Muotka defended his doctoral thesis at University of Jyväskylä in 1994 and continued as a teaching assistant and assistant professor in Jyväskylä until 2002. He then moved to SYKE Helsinki where he spent two years as a senior scientist before being appointed to a professorship in aquatic ecology at University of Oulu in 2004. He has published ca. 180 peer-reviewed articles and supervised 29 PhD theses in various fields of freshwater community ecology. His current research focuses on (i) consequences of intensified land use on stream biodiversity and (ii) bacterial metacommunities in riverine networks.
