BrainTalks: Mansour Taleshi

Perturbations can affect both the signals we use to study the nervous system and the sensorimotor system itself. In this talk, I will discuss how high density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) and motor unit decomposition can provide a window into neural control of movement under changing conditions.

I will first consider technical perturbations to HDsEMG measurement and their influence on motor unit decomposition and movement decoding. I will then move to physiological perturbations, using blood flow restriction (BFR) to explore how altered physiological and sensory conditions affect motor control and neural drive. Finally, I will discuss some ongoing works using controlled stimulation to probe the sensorimotor system, including peripheral nerve stimulation with MEG and TMS combined with HDsEMG and force measurements.

Together, these studies explore how neural activity can be measured, interpreted, and experimentally probed across different levels of the human sensorimotor system.

Mansour Taleshi is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Gerontology Research Center, Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, University of Jyväskylä. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Automation with a focus on Bioelectronics from Aalto University in October 2025. His doctoral research focused on high fidelity neural interfaces and their sensitivity to technical and physiological perturbations, with particular emphasis on HDsEMG and motor unit decomposition. His broader research interests include human motor and sensorimotor control, neural interfacing, biosignal processing, wearable sensing, and machine learning. At the University of Jyväskylä, his current work extends these interests towards physical activity and health assessment, including wearable based activity quantification and remote assessment of physical fitness in ageing populations.
