Research within the field of fat studies demonstrates that fatness remains a highly stigmatized trait, leading to discrimination against fat people in crucial areas such as employment, healthcare, and recreation. Additionally, media discourses persist in perpetuating stereotypical and biased perspectives regarding fatness and those who are fat.

However, anti-fatness is not left unchallenged. Fat activism, “a radical social movement” as Charlotte Cooper calls it, not only resists anti-fat bias but also envisions and puts into practice alternatives for a world where fat rights are acknowledged and respected.

Fat studies, an academic discipline that has grown out of fat activism, is nowadays an integral part of this social movement, but present-day fat “movements” take many forms and deal with diverse topics ranging from sports to fatshion to promoting laws and policies that protect against size-based discrimination. Fat activism can take place online or off; perspectives influenced by fat activism are increasingly present in arts, media, and education. In addition, fat activism is never just about fat. It tends to be intersectional in nature, addressing questions concerning fat and gender, sexuality, “race,” disability, class, and many more.

This third Jyväskylä conference in fat studies focuses on fat movements and fat moves in their many forms, exploring current and future directions.

Where are we now?  Where are we going next?
What questions should we be asking?  Some potential topics to ponder include: How does anti-fatness impede fat people’s societal participation?
Despite these hurdles, how do they still partake in decision-making and activism?
Is intersectionality sufficiently integrated into fat activism? In which ways does fat activism thrive?

This two-day conference welcomes academic papers, talks, as well as artistic presentations. It welcomes papers on topics on the above mentioned themes, but is not limited to them.
