About the event
This event brings together historians and physicists working on the history of science, offering an informal setting for exchange across disciplinary boundaries. Historians affiliated with the Department of History and Ethnology and physicists involved with the History of Science-part of this year’s Jyväskylä Summer School for natural scientists, will present short overviews of their current research projects, connecting historical and scientific perspectives on the field. The event also includes discussion with Prof. Lawrence M. Principe, who joins as a guest discussant, offering his expertise as a leading historian of alchemy and early modern science. Participants will have the opportunity to explore common ground between their respective disciplines, reflecting on how historical and scientific methods can inform and enrich one another. The event provides an opportunity for open conversation, network, and the exchange of ideas across departments and institutions.
About the guest
Lawrence M. Principe is the Drew Professor of the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University, with appointments in both the Department of the History of Science and Technology and the Department of Chemistry. He is one of the world's leading historians of alchemy and early modern chemistry, specializing in the history of science and technology from the medieval to the early modern period. His research explores the intellectual, social, religious, and experimental dimensions of alchemy, combining archival scholarship with the replication of historical alchemical experiments in the laboratory. He is the author of several influential books, including The Secrets of Alchemy and The Scientific Revolution: A Very Short Introduction, and has received numerous distinctions for his contributions to the history of science, including the Franklin–Lavoisier Prize and the Francis Bacon Medal.
The event is organized jointly by the DEPE project and the Department of History and Ethnology, in collaboration with the Department of Physics and the Jyväskylä Summer School.
