JYU.Wisdom Coffee Conversations: Toward a Nature Positive University

The JYU.Wisdom Coffee Conversations are open events where you can learn and discuss about different topics related to planetary well-being, sustainability and responsibility. Every time, a researcher or specialist will present their work and there is room for relaxed discussion. In March, the presenter is JYU Sustainability Specialist Ulla Helimo.

Toward a Nature Positive University – Updating JYU’s Environmental Programme

The Council of Rectors of Finnish Universities (Unifi)'s updated theses on sustainable development and responsibility highlight that climate and biodiversity crises must be addressed together, as the same drivers often underlie both. They also ban greenwashing and call for stronger, evidence-based reporting. They encourage universities to focus not only on their operational impacts but also on their positive contributions through research, education, and societal impact.

Rather than tying carbon neutrality to a fixed year, universities now emphasize a broader perspective of nature positivity alongside climate action, recognizing that merely reducing emissions is too narrow a response to global ecological challenges. These national-level developments provide important guidance as JYU embarks on updating its own environmental programme. Our aim is to align JYU’s future goals with this evolving understanding of sustainability, strengthening our efforts to become a Nature Positive University that enhances biodiversity, supports thriving ecosystems, and embeds ecological responsibility across all our activities.

Contribute in the environmental programme!

In this seminar, we invite expert input from across the JYU community—researchers, teachers, administrative professionals, students, and all who work with sustainability themes. With your insights, we will examine the current environmental programme and the revised Unifi theses. Together, we will explore what Nature Positive means in the university context, how JYU can strengthen its contributions to planetary well-being, and how current programme goals should be modified.

About the presenter

The conversation is led by Ulla Helimo, Sustainability Specialist in JYU’s Division of Policy and Planning. Ulla coordinates the development and monitoring of JYU’s environmental programme, working closely with academic units, campus services, and leadership to ensure that sustainability is integrated into strategic planning.

Why participate?

  • For researchers, JYU.Wisdom events offer intellectual resources and meaningful new connections. Through interdisciplinary discussions you will learn about new topics and, what is more, new ways of thinking. You will also meet other researchers and find a community of people interested in themes related to planetary well-being, through which you can start building multidisciplinary collaborations and find opportunities for deepening them.
  • For students, JYU.Wisdom events offer a window and an entry-point deeper into the academic world. You will learn about new topics, but also about the job of a researcher. By meeting people from other faculties, you will gain new perspectives for your studies. In addition, if you're thinking about an interdisciplinary thesis topic, you may find a supervisor.
    • You may also gain credits. Register for the course WISP2010 Multidisciplinary sustainability discussions, participate in the events announced on the course page, and complete 1-3 credits at your own pace. This event is accepted for the course.
    • Note: taking part in the discussion is not mandatory, you're welcome to join and just listen.
  • For everyone else, the Coffee Conversations seminars offer an opportunity to learn about current research and connect with scholars. The seminars are targeted for the academic community, including students, but everyone interested is warmly welcome to participate.
