Join us for a screening of the feature length documentary A Better Place, produced by a JYU Master's student. Shot in Trinidad and Tobago, the film takes us to five different communities where the people are working to solve sustainability problems. Fishermen, students, waste pickers and many others share their perspectives on the state of the environment in Trinidad and Tobago with a backdrop of local music and culture.
The film will be introduced by the producer Carver Bacchus who will also be present for a Q&A session after.
Engage with sustainability challenges through a fresh lens
A Better Place offers the JYU audience an opportunity to engage with sustainability challenges through a fresh, globally relevant lens. The film reveals how environmental pressures unfold in a small-island, resource-dependent context and demonstrates how local knowledge and culturally rooted problem-solving can emerge. These perspectives create an opportunity for the university audience to compare climate vulnerabilities and reflect on how culture and geography can shape environmental stewardship in ways that differ sharply from the Nordic experience.
Beyond its environmental focus, the film opens space for rich interdisciplinary discussion. It invites reflection on Global South–Global North dynamics, highlighting how global consumption patterns, historical inequalities and governance structures influence everyday life in Trinidad and Tobago. Through its blend of lived experience and local music, the film becomes a catalyst for dialogue, comparative analysis and new perspectives on development.
