The role of gut microbiome in responding to environmental challenges: causal effects on host physiology and their underlying mechanisms

Suvi Ruuskanen

The gut microbiome responds to environmental variation and has been suggested to facilitate rapid host responses and adaptation to those environmental challenges. Yet we still have limited understanding on the causal links between microbiome and host trait variation, especially in non-model species. The underlying molecular mechanisms mediating these effects between microbes and host,  are also poorly characterized. We study the causal role of gut microbiome variation especially in thermal adaptations within and across generations in a bird model, using e.g. microbiome and metabolite experimental manipulations, and characterize putative molecular mediators, incl extracellular vesicles.
