In recent years, two large-scale projects related to (corpus) linguistics have been carried out in Finland and in Norway:
• The ShowTell project: ‘Showing and telling in Finnish Sign Language’
Capitalizing on these two leading Nordic projects in signed language linguistics, this two-day workshop aims to unite researchers working with multimodal SL corpora from a cognitive functional linguistic perspective. In particular, the event will spotlight the outcomes of these two projects, exploring how diverse and innovative methodologies — including empirical corpus analysis, ethnography, brain imaging, and motion capture — can be integrated with theoretical insights. This combination of approaches will help to further refine our understanding of specific signed language ecologies as well as our broader theories of human languaging. The event will take place at the University of Jyväskylä on 20-21 March 2025. The first day of the workshop will focus on SL corpus approaches and the second day of the event will host a broader discussion about the insights provided by diverse methodologies in the language sciences.
