Tardigrades are ubiquitous micrometazoans, yet their ecology and habitat preferences remain poorly understood. This is mostly due to lack of systematic studies with sufficient sampling effort that would enable multivariate analysis, which in turn is because of laborious and time-consuming methods. As moss rich and moist ecosystems, boreal peatlands could offer ideal habitats for tardigrades. Furthermore, peatland habitat heterogeneity could provide an interesting system to study the poorly known aspects of tardigrade ecology. In my doctoral thesis, I explored the main drivers of variation in tardigrade communities in different peatland habitat types and how communities differ in pristine, drained and restored peatlands.
