Although climate change has progressed to the point where not all its impacts can be prevented, it is possible to choose policies that mitigate rather than exacerbate the effects of climate change, according to recommendations from the Research Council of Finland -funded research project Sustainable Livelihoods and Politics at the Margins: Environmental Displacement in South Asia" published in the University of Jyväskylä's Wisdom Letters series. In the paper, Sirpa Tenhunen, Mohammad Jasim Uddin and Dayabati Roy examine sustainable livelihood development in the Sundarbans, a coastal region of India and Bangladesh that is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The Sundarbans is one of the largest threatened mangrove ecosystems, which efficiently store carbon dioxide and protect coastal areas from cyclones. In the launch event for "Confronting Climate Change in the Sundarbans in Coastal India and Bangladesh", experts from India and Bangladesh will comment on the recommendations.
