Meet JYU Fellow, Associate Professor Sergio Maruenda-Bataller from the University of València to discuss timely issues of multilingual, inclusive, and identity-safe learning environments in teacher education.

Prof. Maruenda-Bataller currently spends a month (13 March–13 April 2026) at the Department of Teacher Education. After his introduction, you are welcome to present your recent, ongoing or planned research or intervention work in the topic. The moderator is Tamás Péter Szabó from the Department of Teacher Education, who currently serves as Prof. Maruenda-Bataller's host.

Registration is not needed, but please send a message to tamas.p.szabo@jyu.fi by 30 March noon if you wish to present your research or intervention work during the meeting so that we can guarantee ample time for exchange.

Dr Sergio Maruenda-Bataller is Associate Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the University of València and a senior member of the Interuniversity Institute of Applied Modern Languages (IULMA). His research examines the relationship between language, power, and social inequality, with particular attention to linguistic justice in contexts such as gender-based violence, online abuse, and marginalised identities.

Working primarily within corpus-based critical discourse analysis, he studies how language constructs and legitimises social hierarchies in media, institutional discourse, and digital communication. His work has addressed issues including the discursive representation of gender violence, the linguistic strategies of online groomers, and the role of language in shaping public understandings of inequality.

He has authored over forty scholarly publications and co-edited several interdisciplinary volumes on discourse, gender, and marginality. His research combines linguistic analysis with societal impact, contributing to educational initiatives, public policy discussions, and collaborations with public institutions concerned with the prevention of gender-based and online violence.

As part of his societally engaged work, Sergio Maruenda-Bataller also works as the Coordinator of FORTHEM Multilingualism in School and Higher Education Lab at the University of València.
