Wisdom Coffee Conversations: Action Competence for Planetary Well-being in the era of GenAI

The Home of Wisdom Coffee Conversations are open events where you can learn and discuss about different topics related to planetary well-being, sustainability and responsibility. Every time, a researcher will present their work and there is room for relaxed discussion. In September, the presenter is doctoral researcher Orsolya Tuba.

Why talk about AI in the context of Planetary Well-being? Welcome to the Home of Wisdom Coffee Conversations to learn more and discuss!

Action Competence for Planetary Well-being in the era of GenAI

Humans are the most intelligent and influential species on Earth, with the power to improve or undermine the well-being of the ecosystem and other living things. With the rise of another powerful intelligence, AI, combining the capitalistic need to utilise this new disruptive technology to monetary benefits, the lack of global awareness and action on sustainability and planetary well-being issues are frightening.

My doctoral research focuses on why and how action competence should be developed in universities in their pursuit of education for planetary well-being. The well-being and the future of the planet depends much on our ability to find responsible actions and to act. Action Competence is built upon three components: 1. Knowledge of Action Possibilities, 2. Confidence in one’s Own Influence (self-efficacy), 3. Willingness to Act (Breiting and Mogensen 1999; Onion et al., 2024). With a new, disruptive technology, all of these three components of action competence are directly affected. AI is changing how knowledge is created, shared, and used; how we learn and think; what and how much information we are exposed to; and, as a result, how we act. This talk will touch upon results from debates on the impacts of AI on Action Competence, problematic points with the rise of AI and the changing role of universities, as well as personal dilemmas.

About the presenter

Orsolya (Orsi) Tuba is undertaking her doctoral studies on action competence in education for planetary well-being in the era of AI at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland (under the supervision of Heidi Layne). She is working full-time as a project researcher in the Finnish Institute for Educational Research, Innovative Learning Environments research group. In one of her latest projects (PERMA Digital), Orsi has worked on developing a Digital Well-being framework for adolescents. Recently her research interests have shifted to be more future-orientated as she got inspired to re-think the changing role of higher education and the importance of action competence in the era of AI. Orsi is also a social entrepreneur, running online dialogues with the biggest teachers’ rights movement in Hungary (her home country) and contributing to the InclusiveFuture project with the development of an inclusive and sustainable pedagogical model.
