Come and be a marshal at an academic celebration!
What happens in the Conferment of Degrees Ceremony?
In the Conferment of Degrees Ceremony, the new Masters and Doctors will be given their degree in the ceremonial act of conferment, and will receive a Master’s laurel wreath and ring or a Doctor’s hat and sword as the sign of it. The three-day celebrations include the Act of Conferment, a garland weaving ceremony and a sword-sharpening ceremony on Friday, a church service or non-denominational event, and dinner dance on Saturday, and a cruise on Sunday.
What are students needed for?
A multi-day celebration requires a lot of preparation. Both the university and various committees are responsible for the arrangements. The marshals, who represent the university at all graduation events and help with practical arrangements, play a particularly important role in the success of the graduation ceremony. Without the marshals, it would be impossible to organize this prestigious and memorable celebration!
The marshals get to perform many different tasks. Their duties may include assisting in weaving garlands, serving as honor guards, guiding guests, carrying flags in processions, and assisting doctors in sword sharpening. The marshals are supervised by the Head Marshal, Assistant Professor Mikko Huhtiniemi.
Participating in the Conferment of Degrees Ceremony is a fun and memorable experience and a unique opportunity to get to know this traditional academic celebration!
How do you become a marshal?
