Student exchange and internships for students liable to pay tuition fees
When a degree student of JYU who is liable to pay tuition fees completes a student exchange period as part of their studies, the student needs to register for attendance at JYU for the duration of the exchange, and therefore is required to pay the tuition fee during the time spent in the exchange destination. The same applies to internships which are completed as part of studies.
If you are a student liable to pay tuition fees, the first step in the exchange application process is to discuss your plans with the study advisor in your degree programme. This is to make sure that there is enough room in your degree to include exchange studies, that the timing of the exchange is suitable considering your other (mandatory) studies in the programme, and to ensure that your studies are not prolonged because of the exchange.
If you are planning to go on student exchange or do an internship during your first year of studies
Please note that to be eligible for the JYU Scholarship, you need to have the required 55 ECTS credits registered at JYU during that same academic year (by 31 July). This means that your study credits must be completed well in advance before the end of academic year, and transferred credits added to the Sisu study register by that date.
If you were granted the Fulbright Graduate Award, you need to have the required 55 ECTS credits registered at JYU during that same academic year (by 31 July) in order to receive the scholarship also for your second academic year.
If you are planning to go on student exchange or do an internship abroad during your final year of studies
Please carefully consider whether it is possible for you to complete the exchange or internship, receive the official transcript of records or internship certificate, start the credit transfer process at JYU and apply for graduation before the end of the academic year (31 July). If you do not apply for the degree by the end of the academic year, you are required to pay the tuition fee for the following autumn semester to be able to graduate.

Credit transfer
The transfer of credits completed during student exchange cannot be done before you have obtained an official transcript of records of the studies completed during the exchange. Please note that spring semester in some universities lasts until June/July, after which it might take several weeks or even months before you get your transcript of records from the host university and can start the credit transfer process at JYU.
Please read the instructions on the credit transfer process of exchange studies:
