Funding of student mobility
Scholarship
Everyone selected for JYU's student exchange receives a scholarship for the exchange period. The amount of the scholarship varies depending on the exchange program, the destination and the length of the exchange period. You can see the program-specific grants below.
The grants are linked to the duration of the exchange, not to the completed credits.
Many exchange programs also have additional grants for e.g. students with families or students with special needs.
Accessibility in student exchange
The scholarship is intended to be paid before the start of the mobility period. Make sure that you do all the preceding steps in Mobility Online in due time so that you can proceed to apply for the scholarship in time. If you did not manage to apply for the scholarship before the start of the mobility period, apply for it as soon as possible. You cannot apply for the scholarship anymore once the mobility period has ended, therefore make sure you apply for it and accept the agreement at the very latest before the end of the mobility period.
Students employed by the University of Jyväskylä
It is not possible to go on student exchange or an internship abroad while being employed by JYU. More information can be found on the Student exchange -page.
Other grants and forms of funding
SYL's scholarship database
The National Union of University Students in Finland, SYL, maintains a scholarship database, where you can find information about grants that can be applied for, for example, from foundations and funds.
Faculty level scholarships
Faculties may offer scholarships for their own students.
Costs
Students studying abroad are required to cover the travel costs and the living expenses during the exchange themselves. The host universities do not charge tuition fees from exchange students. However, there may be additional costs due to course handouts and books.
The cost of accommodation and student meals varies considerably between destinations. Please also note that expenses such as travel insurance, possible vaccinations, and a residence permit or visa may result in additional costs.
Many host universities provide estimates of living costs for the semester on their websites. You may also find useful information about the costs of studying abroad at different host universities in student exchange reports.
In addition, the ISEP exchange programme involves other costs, which are outlined on the programme’s information page.
Please note that if you are a tuition-paying student at JYU, you are required to pay the tuition fee to JYU also during your exchange period.
