Timing of studies

The Timeline tab allows students to place the studies included in their study plan on a timeline corresponding to the study time set for the completion of their degree. In the Timeline view, you can distribute studies evenly for the whole timeline of completing the degree. A personal study plan counsellor can view the students' timeline. Currently, comments related to the timing of studies can be written in the study plan comments.

The Timeline tab automatically shows selections made in the personal study plan that was last modified on the Structure of studies tab. If there are multiple study plans, and the viewed study plan is changed on the Structure of studies tab, the Timeline shows selections from this last viewed study plan. You can change the study plan used for the timeline tool at the top of the Timeline tab by clicking the arrow icon next to the study plan name. (My study plan DD.MM.YYYY by default). The timeline only includes courses and possible study drafts selected in the study plan on the Structure of studies tab.

The timing of studies is done on a period-by-period basis. For each period, there is a Schedule courses button, which opens a window where the timing is done.

The course search for the timeline shows all the courses and study drafts that have not been completed in the study plan. The courses are listed under the modules of the study plan in the same order as in the study plan. In a two phase degree, there are separate search views for the lower and upper degrees. For a course, the search view shows information about whether the course in question has already been scheduled or if it has been scheduled for more than one period.

Courses that have been selected to be scheduled for that period or that have already been scheduled for a period will appear in the search view. You can cancel the selection by clicking the cross mark next to the course.

Changes must be saved to have them appear on the timeline. After saving, you will receive a notification that the changes were successful.

If needed, you can schedule courses to more than one period. For now, this is done by adding the course to each period separately. Later it will be possible to schedule the course to multiple periods at once.

Using timing templates

A timing template can be created by study administration staff to plan a recommended completion schedule for degree programmes. You can use the timing template as a basis for your timing plan. The timing template does not bind you but helps you get an idea of the progress of studies towards the completion of the degree.

To use possible timing templates, click the blue Schedule courses with a timing template button at the top of the Timeline view. This opens the templates. If a timing template exists, it can be chosen from the pull-down menu. As a rule, you should use the timing template made for your study group based on the start year of your studies. Click Schedule to time all courses that are selected for your plan AND have defined time periods.

Timing template

The timing template organizes timed courses by period based on their level, e.g. basic studies → language and communication studies → advanced studies. If you have already scheduled or completed courses, the use of a timing template does not overrule these selections or any completed studies. Courses timed with a timing template are treated similar to other timed courses: you can remove them and adjust their timing.

If you remove courses or study modules from your study plan in the Structure of studies tab, they are also removed from your timeline. If you add courses or study modules to your study plan, their timing is not updated automatically. If a new course or study module has been added to the timing template, you can add them to your timeline by selecting the same timing template and adding it to your timing again.

Removing the timings

You can remove the timings of individual courses in the period view by unchecking the courses that you do not want to schedule in that period. Then save the changes. You can also remove all timings by selecting Delete all timings in the Timeline view. NOTE! This function removes all scheduled uncompleted courses from the timing – including the ones you have timed yourself.
