What is Each One Teach One (EOTO)?

Each One Teach One, more commonly known as EOTO, is a pair language learning programme coordinated by the Center for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi). In the EOTO program, you learn both your partner’s first language (or language of schooling) and culture. In return, you help your partner become familiar with your own first language and culture. Participation in the programme does not require language teaching qualification or teacher training.

During the programme, you meet regularly with your partner, usually once or twice a week. You study both languages for at least 20 hours with your partner (20 + 20 hours). Language learning also includes doing homework, preparing for meetings, and reporting on your learning according to instructions. Supervisors meet with you at the beginning and end of the programme. Between these meetings, they read and comment on your blog, thereby guiding your learning.

In the EOTO programme, you decide what to study, what materials to use, and what your schedule will be. Your partner can suggest where to find good materials and exercises, but you select your own materials and choose the exercises that suit you best. The programme is based on independent study, which you plan with the support of your partner. The duration of the course is generally one semester. If you meet your partner twice a week for a total of 3–4 hours, completing the program takes about three months.

When you complete the programme successfully, you receive two credits for elective studies in the language you have studied. You can take one EOTO course at a time. You can complete the programme more than once, but no more than twice per language. Please note that an EOTO course cannot substitute other Movi courses.
