JLPT - Ja­pan­ese Lan­guage Pro­fi­ciency Test

Registration period is from August 31, 7 am until September 16, 11:59 pm.

1. Please read through the JLPT Test Guide (can be downloaded from this site) before you start registering.
    

2. Please take a photo of yourself for your application. 

   Acceptable photos
   •    A portrait photo with a 3:4 aspect
   •    Taken within the past 6 months
   •    Max 15Mb
   •    JPG or JPEG or PDF format
   •    Make sure you are depicted straight on with your entire face visible and eyes open

   Unacceptable photos
   •    Taken against a non-solid background (dark background)
   •    Blurred photos (too dark）
   •    Your eyes are closed
   •    You are wearing a hat
   •    Snapshots, such as taken together with other people
   •    Your face is too small or too big relative to the photo size
    

3. Go to the registration form and register for the test. Please double check to see that all your information is correct when registering.
    
4. Pay the test fee. At the end of the registration form, you will be directed to the payment form. The test fee must be paid within the registration period.
    
5. After the payment, you will receive a confirmation of your registration. We will also send you your personal Test Voucher by email a bit later. Please bring the Test Voucher to the test site along with ID.

For Applicants who may have difficulty taking the test because of a certain illness, injury, physical disability or other impairments/conditions, Japan Foundation offers the following accommodations:

1. Special question booklets (Braille and enlarged print question booklets)
2. Alternative answering methods (Braille and writing answers directly on question booklets)
3. Extended testing time
4. Testing in a separate room
5. Use of necessary equipment (magnifying glass, hearing aids, headphones, etc.)
6. Other accommodations that the Japan Foundation deems suitable 

If you wish to apply for Special Testing Accommodations (STA), please contact us by email jlpt-movi@jyu.fi for a "Request Form for Special Testing Accommodations". Applicants are also required to submit a medical certificate or other relevant documentation. You can also contact us well in advance of your registration so that we can ensure that you have time to submit the necessary documents on time.

Submit the completed Request Form and attachments by the deadline of the registration. The application of the STA ends at the same time as registration for the test.

The content of the STA will be reviewed and finalized in Japan Foundation in consultation with specialists, based on the documents submitted by the applicant. However, please note that some requested accommodations may not be granted.

Please remember to report any electronic devices that you will need during the test, such as a blood glucose meter or hearing aid.
 

JLPT fees:

• levels N1–N3: 80 €
• levels N4–N5: 70 €

Once you have completed the registration form, you will be directed to the payment form to pay the test fee.

Payments are processed through Paytrail. The test fee can be paid using Finnish online banking services, credit cards or mobile payment methods. 

The fee must be paid upon registration; invoicing is not available. 

After a successful payment, you will receive a confirmation email and a payment receipt. 

Registration is binding. No refunds will be issued.

Tentative schedule:

From the December 2025 JLPT examination onwards, the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices is strictly prohibited from the moment candidates enter the examination room until the end of the examination, including during breaks. If any device is found to be switched on or in use during this period, the candidate’s exam will be invalidated. Please note that if a device is switched on during breaks, this will also be considered misconduct and your exam will be invalidated.

Electronic devices refer to all devices that have communication or camera functions and that enable the exchange of data via wireless or wired connections. These include, among others, mobile phones, smartphones, smartwatches, personal computers, tablets, headphones, wearable devices, music players and similar devices.

If you need, for example, a hearing aid or a blood glucose meter, please apply for Special Testing Accommodations.

• Examinees must keep all electronic devices switched off throughout the examination. Devices must also be switched off during breaks.
• Do not wear clothing with Japanese or Chinese writing on it.
• Use a pencil with a lead grade of HB, B or 2B.

By train

It is about a 20-minute walk from Jyväskylä Travel Centre to the Agora building.

By bus

Please check the impact of public holidays on public transport timetables, for example in the route guide.

By car and bicycle

There is plenty of parking space and bike racks in front of the Agora building.

You will be able to view your exam results on the official JLPT website in early February. Further information is available on the Japan Foundation’s official JLPT website.

A paper copy of your exam results and any certificate will be sent by post by March at the latest, once we have received them from the Japan Foundation.

Can I register by email?

No. Only registrations submitted via the registration form will be accepted. A link to the registration form will be published on this website in August.

Is the test held at the same time every year?

The December exam is always held on the first Sunday in December. There is no summer exam in Finland. If you wish to take the summer exam, please check the list of exam centres in other countries on the JLPT website.

Can I take more than one level of the exam at the same time?

No. Candidates may only take one level at a time.

Which level should I choose?

JLPT levels range from the easiest (N5) to the most demanding (N1). Levels N4–N5 measure basic proficiency, N1–N2 measure more advanced language use in everyday situations, and N3 acts as an intermediate level between them. You can test your level by trying the sample questions on the official JLPT page.

I am not Finnish / I do not live in Finland / I don’t speak Finnish. Can I take the exam in Finland?

Yes, you can. People of all nationalities are welcome to take the test. All instructions are in English and Japanese.
