What is a student tutor?

Application round for exchange tutoring in the spring semester 2026 begins on 29 September 2025. Read the instructions below and apply!

Tutors help new students - referred to as tutees - to get acquainted with their living environment and studying at the University of Jyväskylä. Tutors are trained students, who provide support in various practical matters by completing tutor tasks. Tutoring of international students include following tasks:

  • Communicating with tutees before, during, and after their arrival
  • Meeting tutees on arrival and escorting them to their student apartments
  • Accompanying tutees to orientation and organising campus, library, and city tours
  • Assisting with course registration
  • Organising getting-to-know-you activities and opportunities to connect with other students
  • Helping with services within and outside the campus area (International Office, Student Services, Student Union, DVV, Migri, banks, etc.)

Tutors may also have additional tasks based on the type of tutoring (see below). Tutors are reimbursed for completing tutor tasks. All tutor tasks are thoroughly covered in the tutor training. Each tutor is assigned with a number of tutees.

Working as a tutor is a great way to form contacts with new students, develop your language skills, gain work experience in guiding a multicultural group, and participate in creating a positive image of Finland.

Degree or exchange tutoring?

Eligibility requirements for tutoring

To apply for tutoring, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Have studied at JYU for at least a year as a degree student by the time tutoring starts
  • Have enrolled for the semester during which the tutoring takes place
  • Have good command of English language

As a tutor, you're also required to:

  • Attend the mandatory tutor training on campus. Only for particularly compelling reasons (e.g., being on an exchange during the training) can the in-person training be replaced with independent studying and self-study material.
  • Be back in Jyväskylä and ready to meet your tutees from the recommended arrival date onward (see the detailed schedule below). Tutors are expected to contact their tutees three weeks before the recommended arrival date, at the latest.

Busiest times of tutoring usually take place at the beginning of semester, but it is desirable to save some tutoring hours for February, if possible.
