Where can I find suitable studies?

Studies and courses offered by the University of Jyväskylä

The JYU Study Guide includes all curricula and teaching schedules of the University. In addition, study unit information can also be searched directly from Sisu system.

However, remember the following:

  • in different units, the content is updated differently. The teaching schedules for the entire academic year may not be available from the beginning of autumn.
  • to some studies or courses it may be necessary to apply for a study permit separately from the relevant department/faculty/discipline.
  • it is worth remembering that not all studies commensurate with the curriculum are compulsory or even possible to be completed by enrolling to a course. So always look in the curriculum what studies you need to do and what are the possible completion methods, and then choose a completion method that works for you.
  • check that you are enrolling in studies at the appropriate level. As a general rule, study units should be at doctoral studies level or at the level of master's studies. However, always check the requirements in more detail from your own curriculum.

University of Jyväskylä Staff training

The University organises staff training, which is coordinated by HR services. It includes e.g. training on research-related skills and digital skills. All JYU members, including all doctoral students, are welcome as long as there is still room within the maximum number of participants set for the event. Admission to some staff training has to be separately applied for. Then the announced admission criteria are used for selecting the participants.

Please note that staff training is generally a non-credit training, i.e. you do not get credits from it.

Study offerings of other universities

As a general rule, doctoral studies completed elsewhere than at the University of Jyväskylä can also be credited or included in doctoral studies, if they are in accordance with the curriculum and your own doctoral study plan. For example, in Finland there are several doctoral programs coordinated by other universities, whose course offerings may include interesting opportunities. The offering of doctoral programs is mainly aimed at their own members, but sometimes they might be open to other participants as well. Practices vary by doctoral programme and course. Please follow the information on the websites of the doctoral programs and find out about the possibilities of participation on a case-by-case basis.

On the Doctoral courses in Finland website, you can find studies offered by Finnish universities to doctoral students from other Finnish universities. The University Pedagogical Support learning platform contains self-study materials on university pedagogy. Sometimes the universities offer courses based on the online materials.

Tips on the study offer for doctoral students at the University of Jyväskylä

The Methodology Centre for Human Sciences (IHME) actively organizes doctoral studies level courses, primarily in research methods, but also related to the philosophy and ethics of science and general research skills.

The Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi) offers a wide range of language and communication studies. There are courses on, for example, presentation skills and several different languages. Teaching especially aimed at doctoral students includes scientific communication courses in both Finnish and English. In addition, Movi offers Finnish as a second language studies also for doctoral students.  

The JYU Open Science Centre offers courses for doctoral students e.g. in systematic information seeking and management, reference management and publishing. Open Science Centre also offers e.g. an LIBJ1001 Open Science and Research online course and LIBJ2002 Collect, Manage and Publish Information course.
