HISTORICAL ROSES AND PERENNIALS IN SEMINAARINPUISTO
The garden of Finland's first teachers' seminary (which preceded the University of Jyväskylä), Seminary Park, became Finland's first official school garden in 1883. With the students of the seminary, the teachings of gardening and growing edible plants spread throughout the country. Here, in the oldest part of the Seminaarinmäki garden, the species grown in the area during the teacher seminary (1883-1934) are cherished. The arrangements for horticultural education were reported annually to the Finnish National Agency of Education. The reports (nowadays found in the collections of the National Archives) can be used to trace plant species grown in the area at the time.
On this plant bed beside the Historica building, species from the 1920s and 30s grown in the Seminary Park area have been planted in here 2024:
-Shrub roses: 'Williams Double Yellow' (Rosa Harisonii Group) and Rosa 'Minette' ("Mustialanruusu")
-Perennials: Vinca minor, Anemone sylvestris, Viola odorata, Cerastium tomentosum, Primula veris, Iris pumila, Sedum spurium
-Bulb flowers: white daffodil 'Actaea' (Narcissus poeticus), snakes-head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris)
