Diversities and social justice​

The focus area "Diversities and social justice" examines processes of inclusion and exclusion.
Research at the Department of Language and Communcation Studies

Our critical analysis of language use and communication sheds light on the way different forms of diversities are perpetuated and contested in society. Our research in diversities and social justice uncovers and tackles processes of inclusion and exclusion – for example related to migration and other mobilities, marginalized groups, racism and coloniality, language policies in society and organisations, professional expertise in a changing society, and signed languages as part of our shared linguistic and social environment. 

This research contributes to scientific and societal discussions about the role of language and discourse in promoting participation, inclusion, and belonging in society, and in working towards social and planetary wellbeing and justice.

This research project examines how local democracy is accomplished through interaction between citizens and city experts.

Researching racial landscapes through the experiences of women of color living in Bordeaux, Rotterdam and Helsinki

Cities tell stories about who we are in various ways: statues, street names, flags are some examples. Looking at racial landscapes is a way to explore the stories told about race, racism and whiteness in cities.
