More than 200 new students are accepted into the 18 doctoral programmes of the University of Jyväskylä every year. About 26 % of them come from abroad.

To be awarded a doctorate, the student admitted to a doctoral programme must complete the required studies, demonstrate independent and critical thinking in the field of research, write a doctoral dissertation, and defend it in public. At the University of Jyväskylä, the extent of required studies varies between a minimum of 30 ECTS credits and a maximum of 60 ECTS credits depending on the programme. The scope of the dissertation is designed so that the doctoral degree can be completed within four years of full-time work.

Application for admission to the doctoral programmes is organised twice a year. In the application round of autumn 2023, the deadline for applications is 14 September 2023 at 15.00. The doctoral study right of accepted applicants starts in January 2024. The next application period will take place in April 2024.
