“According to the Universities Act, the University Board elects the rector for a fixed term of at the most five years,” says Chair of the University Board Krista Varantola. “The Board wanted to have an open and public application process for the position. This is a strong show of confidence towards the current rector.”

The rector is required to have a doctoral degree, abilities and professional competencies needed in the position as well as good leadership skills demonstrated in practice. A rector must have a command of both strategic and operative leadership and develop the University in a future-oriented manner.

The rector’s duty is to lead the University’s education, research and societal interaction in an effective and efficient manner. The rector is also responsible for the preparation of matters that come before the University Board as well as the implementation of decisions.

The University Board will make a decision in the matter in May.
