City of Jyväskylä recommends moving to distance teaching
The university will update its instructions for teaching and other activities on Monday and inform staff and students as soon as possible. The JYU community should prepare for tighter restrictions.
“I appeal to all JYU employees and students in order to get the situation under control”, says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen. “It is now especially important to minimise physical contacts and work and study via remote connections. Instead of arranging Christmas parties and other gatherings, we should stop the spreading of infections. This way we can, hopefully, ensure that we are able to meet our friends and families in Christmas.”
“The university community has lived through a heavy and quiet autumn”, says Ira Vainikainen, Chair of the Board of the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä. “Nevertheless, the coronavirus situation has become worse in Jyväskylä. The most important means to ensure the health and safety of us all is to follow the City of Jyväskylä’s instructions and recommendations in daily life.”
“JYU’s coronavirus instructions allow flexible adjustment of distance and contact teaching and a strong focus on remote work according to the epidemic situation”, says Development Director Jarkko Pirkkalainen. Already now, contact teaching takes place only in courses in which it is essential. “The next few weeks are crucial for the development of the situation. Remote work, independent studying and group work by avoiding physical contacts are the best ways to slow down the epidemic. In this situation, it should be considered especially carefully what is critical activity on the campus.”
Today, on 27 November, the City of Jyväskylä has published new recommendations for gatherings and hobby activities.
The City of Jyväskyä recommends higher education institutions and upper secondary education to move fully to distance teaching from 30 November to 13 December 2020. Also the Government recommends higher education institutions to move to distance teaching, considering the needs for necessary contact teaching.
JYU will give more detailed instructions on the organisation of teaching on Monday.
The university strongly recommends the use of face masks on the campus and in free time and to install the Koronavilkku app.
Additionally, the City of Jyväskylä has recommended to interrupt all indoor sports sessions of citizens over 18 for two weeks (30 November–13 December 2020). More information on Academic Sports in the rest of the year will be provided early next week.
The City of Jyväskylä also recommends not to organise private events of more than 10 people in Jyväskylä until 15 January.
