Completed degrees at JYU in 2021: numbers back to normal after the record year

In the record year 2020, the number of new Masters was 1864, Bachelors 1416, and Doctors 176.
- It is delighting that despite the difficulties due to the prolonged pandemic and related emphasis on remote teaching, we reached the same level in the number of degrees as in 2019. The year 2020 was exceptional in this respect because the transition period for the old, major subject based degree system was ending. In my opinion, last year’s good result in the number of completed degrees is an encouraging indication that, despite the exceptional times, the students were finely capable of progressing with their studies. Our staff’s expertise and competence in organising high-quality teaching and guidance amidst the prolonged pandemic played a crucial role in this achievement, states Vice Rector Marja-Leena Laakso.
The largest number of doctoral degrees was reached in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (42), the Faculty of Education and Psychology (28), and the Faculty of Mathematics and Science (26). The Faculty of Information Technology recorded 18 doctoral degrees, the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences had 15, and Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics (JSBE) 8.
Also the number of Master’s degrees completed was biggest in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (438) and in the Faculty of Education and Psychology (385). JSBE had 223, the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences 195, the Faculty of Information Technology 190, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Science 106 new Master graduates.
The figures are still preliminary.
The degree objectives agreed between the Ministry of Education and Culture and the University of Jyväskylä for years 2021–2024 are on average 1731 Master’s and 150 doctoral degrees per year. The average annual objective for Bachelor’s degrees is 1460.
