Degrees in 2019: Growth in the number of master’s degrees

The University of Jyväskylä exceeded its master’s degree targets clearly, achieving in total 1,575 masters degrees in 2019. Excluding the exceptional year 2008, this is the largest number of master’s degrees at JYU. In 2018, the number of master’s degrees was 1,513 and bachelor’s degrees 1,235 (1,220 in 2018).

From 2010 to 2019, the University has produced as many as 1,520 doctoral degrees. The total number of masters degrees during the decade is 14,452.

“This excellent result in the number of master’s degrees is a result of our determined long-term effort to develop teaching and guidance and support students’ wellbeing and studies,” says Vice Rector Marja-Leena Laakso. This is our most important societal function: to educate brave, academic experts who develop the world in a responsible way.”

The number of doctoral degrees completed at JYU in 2019 was 127. In 2018, the number was 139.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Science (38), the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (37) and the Faculty of Information Technology (20) achieved the highest numbers of doctoral degrees. They were followed by the Faculty of Education and Psychology (12), the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences (11) and the School of Business and Economics (9).

The faculties with the highest numbers of master’s degrees were the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (445) and the Faculty of Education and Psychology (423). They were followed by the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences (226) and the School of Business and Economics (172). The Faculty of Information Technology had 170 master’s graduates and the Faculty of Mathematics and Science 139.

The University’s degree targets for 2017–2020, agreed with the Ministry of Education and Culture, are on average 1,475 masters and 138 doctors per year. The average target for bachelor’s degrees is 1,360 degrees per year.
