Digitalisation challenges teachers' ICT skills – update your competences online

The changing digital environment creates the need for continuous learning opportunities. Competence with digital tools is one of the biggest requirements in the world of work. However, there is a lot of variation in digital skills in the field of education and teaching.

The Digitally Competent Educators programme is built to suit teachers of different levels of education. The three-module programme was piloted a couple of years ago as part of the E-SLP project, which developed short-term trainings for working adults. Now it is open to all teachers and educators around the world, from early childhood education to adult education.

“From these high-quality online courses, you will gain information about teaching, assignments, assessment, interaction and collaboration in an online environment. You will learn to choose the right digital media for your work, and understand the limitations and responsibilities of online content,” says teacher Sanna Juutinen from the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä.

Courses for different levels of competence

The Digitally Competent Educators programme (15 ECTS) provides knowledge and skills to learners of all levels.

The first module, Introduction to Digital Competences for Educators (5 ECTS), starts from the basics. It focuses on using digital technologies for communication, collaboration and professional development as well as supporting classroom differentiation, personalised education and learners active engagement.

The second module, Teaching and Learning with Digital Resources (5 ECTS), is for teachers who already have some experience in online teaching. It helps you identify resources that best fit the learning objectives, learner group, teaching style and materials, as well as other digital resources to support teaching.

The third module, Facilitating and Assessing Learners' Digital Competencies (5 ECTS), is for more advanced users of information and communication technology. It focuses on how digital technologies can enhance existing assessment strategies.

Registration for the online study modules is now open.

The Digitally Competent Educators programme is created jointly by the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), FernUniversität in Hagen (Germany), Universidade Aberta (Portugal) and Anadolu University (Turkey).
