“Promoting equality in physical activity and sport is a central part of our faculty’s values and activities. By committing to the declaration, we want to strengthen this work and contribute to building a more equal field of sport and physical activity,” says Dean Vesa Linnamo.

On Thursday, May 21, the faculty will join 27 Finnish organizations promoting physical activity and sport in committing to the declaration at a joint signing event at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

The Brighton+ Helsinki Declaration is an international document that outlines ten principles for promoting the status of women and girls in physical activity and sport. Its aim is to create and foster a culture in which the participation of women and girls is valued and practically enabled. The declaration is coordinated by the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG), in which Finland is an active participant.

The declaration has more than 600 signatories from around the world. By joining, the participating organizations wish to demonstrate their commitment to advancing gender equality even more strongly.

A joint signing event will be held on Thursday, May 21, from 9:00 to 11:00 at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. The Chair of the IWG, Annamarie Phelps, will also be in attendance.
