FinnUruSTEAM Project Concludes Final Mobility Period in Uruguay

The third and final mobility period of the FinnUruSTEAM project took place at the scenic UDE campus in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, and the FCA UDE campus in Montevideo, bringing together Finnish and Uruguayan partners for a week of in-person collaboration, exchange, and reflection. This time, Orsolya Tuba, and Matias Mäki-Kuutti from our Innovative Learning Environments Finland research team were also joined by Anssi Lindell, Adjunct professor from the Department of Teacher Education and Department of Physics, JYU. We met once again the project coordinators from the University of Eastern Finland, Prof. Sirpa Kokko, Kari Sormunen and Päivikki Liukkonen, and we were hosted kindly by our project partners from Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias Universidad de la Empresa (FCA-UDE). The Finnish-Uruguayan partnership aims at joint curriculum development and intensive training in the STEAM approach to teacher education at UEF, JYU and FCA-UDE.

The week began with a presentation by the Finnish teams from the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and the University of Jyväskylä (JYU), showcasing STEAM approaches in Finnish higher education to a group of around 20 participants. Silvana Flecchia from FCA UDE shared the Uruguayan team’s outcome titled "STEAM en Uruguay: Actividades de enseñanza elaboradas por y para docentes". This summary serves as a foundation for a parallel compilation now underway in Uruguay, capturing practical insights for educators. This session set the tone for productive discussions that followed throughout the week.

The team’s itinerary included visits to the UDE Faculty of Design in Montevideo, the Faculty of Chemistry at Universidad de la República, and the School of Arts and Crafts Dr. Pedro Figari (UTU-DGETP), where they explored diverse teaching methods and design-based learning environments. Additionally, Orsi and Matias visited CEIBAL, an initiative with which the University of Montevideo has a bilateral teacher exchange agreement.

Collaborative sessions throughout the week focused on reviewing project outcomes and planning the final deliverables. A workshop facilitated by Päivikki generated material for a final project booklet, while discussions highlighted the potential for a joint academic paper based on the results from earlier webinars and workshops.

Looking ahead, the final webinar is tentatively scheduled for 2 October 2025. The remaining months will be dedicated to finalizing reports, refining resources, and considering further collaborative research.

The FinnUruSTEAM project concludes its mobility phase with strengthened ties, shared resources, and a clear path forward for continued international collaboration in teacher education and STEAM development.

A warm thanks to everyone in the project and for the entire UDE team for once again hosting us in beautiful Uruguay!
