Interdisciplinary collaboration is needed to advance sustainability transformations

The aim of the Wisdom Days conference is to bring together multi- and interdisciplinary scholarship that seeks to create knowledge, understanding, or solutions related to some of the most significant challenges our world is facing: escalating climate crises, biodiversity loss, and growing social inequalities.

The organizing committee is delighted by the enthusiasm with which the new conference has been received.

“The call for papers gathered more than 270 abstracts, and the quality was exceptionally high. Thank you to all submitters! Evaluating them was very interesting,” says Senior Researcher Rémi Duflot.

“The idea for Wisdom Days was originally born within our JYU.Wisdom community in May 2024. It’s wonderful to see the idea becoming reality through the efforts of our team and the engagement of our prospective participants”, continues Assistant Professor Teea Kortetmäki.

Engaging conference programme features talks, workshops and networking opportunities

The Wisdom Days organizing committee has paid particular attention to making room and opportunities for discussions and new connections. In addition to talks, posters, keynotes, and conference dinner, the programme features a number of workshops. There are 5 pre- and post-conference workshops as well as 12 workshops selected through the call for abstracts.

“To reach transformations we also need different ways of learning, experiencing and relating to others. Therefore, Wisdom Days offers a variety of workshops on conference topics that offer participants opportunities to learn, experience, reflect, participate and share with others in multiple different ways. The high-quality workshop abstracts together with participants from various disciplines guarantee interesting and rewarding experiences,” says Doctoral Researcher Tiia Kontkanen.

Keynotes explore Indigenous futures, behavioural change, and regeneration

The conference’s three keynote speakers discuss fascinating topics from different fields of research. Research professor Rauna Kuokkanen (University of Lapland) will begin by posing the following question: What would it mean to design sustainability transformations that begin from Indigenous futures, rather than fit Indigenous peoples, their ways of knowing, governing, and relating into pre-existing models?

Professor Christian A. Klöckner (Norwegian University of Science and Technology)will present success stories of how people manage to change their behaviour in a more sustainable direction, but also failures to do so. Specialized in environmental psychology, he reflects on the potential and limits of behaviour science to address the big challenges of our societies.

Finally, Professor Jörn Fischer (Leuphana University Lüneburg) will explore regeneration, which has entered discourses in several different fields. He notes that parallels between the fields can offer generalized insights on regenerative systems, which can in turn spark further insights for sustainability science and practice.
