Investigation completed on an alleged violation of responsible conduct of research
The University takes any violations of research ethics seriously. The Rector directs the processing of alleged misconduct of the responsible conduct of research. In 2010–2020, the University had in total 21 processed cases, of which 7 were verified as disregard for the responsible conduct of research or research misconduct. In total more than 3,000 publications and almost 3,000 final theses (dissertations, master’s theses and bachelor’s theses) are completed at JYU every year.
On 4 September 2020, Rector Keijo Hämäläinen has made a decision on a case, surfaced in 2017, of an alleged violation of the responsible conduct of research at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science. In its final report, the investigation committee concluded that two scientific articles published at the department involved research misconduct, which in this case refers to the falsification of research results. In compliance with the guidelines of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity, the decision has been sent for information to the home organisations of partners, the financers and other stakeholders of the research.
