JYU and other Finnish universities freeze institutional cooperation with Russia
This does not affect the Russian citizens who are currently studying or working at JYU. It is still possible to apply for the University as a student or researcher regardless of your citizenship.
The University of Jyväskylä strongly condemns the Russian act of war and expresses support to Ukraine and all who suffer directly and indirectly.
“It is great that the members of our university community participate actively by expressing solidarity and providing concrete support to those who suffer from the war,” says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen. “The University of Jyväskylä, together with the Ministry of Education and Culture and other Finnish universities, is preparing actions to support students and academic staff in the countries that are suffering from the war – not only in the immediate crisis but also long term. Though we all hope for a rapid solution to the situation, reconstruction will take years. It is during those years to come that our support will be vital.”
The extended management team of the University of Jyväskylä operates as the steering group of the exceptional situation and will gather regularly to discuss possible effects of the Ukraine situation to the operations of the University. The composition of the extended management team will be supplemented with expert members. The policies of the extended management team will be communicated via the JYU channels: Intranet Uno, Jyu.fi, and newsletters for students and staff.
No new policies related to the operations of the University were made in the meeting of Monday, 7 March. Universities communicate actively with the Ministry of Education and Culture about the effects of national policies to their operations.
“The situation evokes many kinds of feelings in us,” Hämäläinen says. It is good to remember that no military threat is directed to Finland at the moment and that all members of our community are safe in Finland. No staff members or students need to leave Finland because of the war in Ukraine.”
“The University of Jyväskylä is a multicultural community in which all members must be treated equally regardless of citizenship,” Hämäläinen says. “Bullying, harassment or discrimination are against the values and operating principles of our University.”
It is good to seek help with a low threshold when having worries or fears resulting from the situation. The bulletin titled “How to deal with the concern caused by the war?” includes advice for taking care of your wellbeing and a list of people and places you can contact when in need for support.
The University of Jyväskylä will regularly inform the university community about the situation.
