JYU celebrates new alumni – meaningful opportunity to look back as well as forward
The event, held in the iconic Main Building on Seminaarinmäki, brought together graduating degree students from JYU's English-taught programmes, departing exchange students, and members of JYU staff.
The programme consisted of information about what the alumni community of JYU has to offer and the study opportunities that are available for international students. The choir Ylistön yllärit gave two stirring performances: Käppee originally sung by famed Finnish folk music band Värttinä kicked off the proceedings, while later on the hymn Gaudeamus igitur (from the Latin "So let us rejoice") gave the event a true touch of Finnish and European academic tradition.
The high point of the event came at the end of the programming, with two beautiful speeches.
First, Master's degree graduate Asha Nape Liyanage (MA in Educational Sciences) spoke on behalf of the graduating class:
"Each of us has gained something meaningful, even more than we expected. We will carry the values of this institution out into the world, and our achievements will reflect back on our alma mater."
The programme was rounded out by the words of the Vice Rector for education, Marja-Leena Laakso:
"I hope that your time studying here at JYU will remain in your memories as one of the best times of your life. Above all, I hope you felt important and part of our community --- I hope that your time in Finland and Jyväskylä has broadened your horizons and given you new experiences.
Following the rousing speeches was a round of toasts as well as coffee and cake. Not to mention the fantastic ice cream made and served by another member of the graduating class!
Many congratulations to each new JYU Alum – you deserve to celebrate!
