JYU continues its operations in accordance with the current acceleration phase COVID-19 policies

The University of Jyväskylä will continue its operations in accordance with the current coronavirus policies at least until 28 March 2021. Today, on 25 February, the Finnish Government has given a decision in principle for a lockdown from 8–28 March 2021. The purpose of the lockdown is to prevent the acceleration of the epidemic and the spreading of more infectious virus variants. The university’s current operating model is in line with the Government’s decision.

Contact teaching that is necessary in order to achieve learning outcomes will be arranged on the campus by following strict safety precautions. The vice dean responsible for education or the director of an independent institute will decide on contact teaching arranged on the campus. The maximum number of persons is 10 in contact teaching and 20 in exams.

Self-study facilities cannot be opened in the current situation. Up-to-date information on library services is available at https://kirjasto.jyu.fi/en. Entertainment/evening events of subject associations as well as choir and hobby group activities are not arranged in JYU facilities. Subject associations can reserve university premises for their meetings, in which case the maximum number of people is six.

Research activities will continue based on the research permits granted earlier. The earlier approval practices will be followed for new research permits. The vice rector responsible for research and innovations will make decisions on innovation activities that involve test subjects from outside the university.

“We are aware of that many members of our community were already hoping we could return to the campus,” says Rector Keijo Hämäläinen. “However, based on the situation analysis of the Government, we cannot open our activities at this point. Our aim is to enable that people can return and meet each other on the campus as soon as it is possible.”

It is extremely important that everyone follows the health authorities’ recommendations on, for example, face masks, safe distances and hygiene.

The next situation estimation will be made by 24 March. Policies for the autumn will be made on 12 March. The University monitors the development of the epidemic situation nationally and regionally especially considering the possible effects of virus variants.

The Communicable Diseases Act was renewed on 22 February. It defines binding measures for organisations and operators to prevent the spreading of epidemic. Organisations must have operating instructions that help to prevent the spreading of infections. The Act stipulates that customers and participants must have an opportunity to wash hands and that the cleaning of facilities and surfaces must be intensified. JYU has implemented the principles of the renewed Act during the COVID-19 crisis.
